Here's another idea. If you choose to have a few before the show, video yourself. Compare it to a show you do sober. See which way works best for you.

Plus, doing something socially for fun vs a paid performance totally different...being paid means being pro...
I know some can do it, but why get used to that ritual if you don't have to?

Here's a obscure reference...Does anyone remember the WKRP episode in which Dr. Johnny Fever becomes for proficient, quicker and sharper with each and every drink he's had?

I remember that episode, and I've known many radio DJs over the decades who are really like that; sadly or fortunately, I was not one of them.

I would say professionalism is a big part. Anyone who watches Mad Men knows the powerful image of how much these high-flying executives drink and smoke at work. It's quite a striking thing to watch, but why? Because today's societal expectations and definitions of professionalism baulk at such behaviour - what was "acceptable" in the 1950s is viewed very differently today. So regardless of the differences between performance work and traditional 9-to-5 that were raised earlier, the fact is, if you are being paid, then your audience (and client) are expecting certain things from you. And whether or not WE think that our work is different to the 9-to-5, we can't guarantee that THEY will agree with our perception. In my part of the world, it's rare that an organisation will allow someone to drink before or at work - undertaking duties under the influence of drugs or alcohol is grounds for instant dismissal. So when they pay ME to entertain them, they are carrying these same assumptions of professionalism in their mind. In entertainment, I am there to serve THEM, and not myself, so I will do what is necessary to avoid offence.

You also have to put it into context. I have been to very upscale strolling gigs inside of huge homes, dress up parties that have open bars and the owner of the house, the person that hired you is having a good time, when you show up early to talk things over and get a lay of the land, I think it is perfectly acceptable to have a drink with the guy that hired you, and sort of walk and have a discussion prior to the gig. I have done that a lot and I have never had anything negative come from it.
Any time I have been hired for a special occasion where a bar or club is rented out and they are having a party or event, same thing, showing up early and even giving a hand with the final preparations aside from what you do, while having a drink and helping out has never proved to be an issue. However, For the theaters or any type of corporate event, or strolling gig at a banquet, I have never had a drink in these type of environments Everyone can comment on if THEY think you should or shouldn't drink, but that is only personal opinion. Everyone well feel justified in their views so we could go back n forth all day. It comes down to the individual. Their surroundings, The tone of the environment, and the personalty and expectations of the client. - Each time has to be a choice made on a case by case basis, and there is no 1 way of thinking that covers it all. Im surprised nobody has mentioned the rare times it might actually be considered rude to refuse a drink with someone..,, It's not often, but there are times you could come off the wrong way by saying no. Rare, But it does happen. |

I agree with Head Case, it's all about the context. But if you'd have to choose between the two, choose not to drink.
In my parlor act I make shots and champagne glass appear. It's just meant to look like alcohol and I always make a point of telling the person who hired me prior to starting the show. Some don't care and joke about hinting I should put the real stuff in there while some really appreciate the professionalism. |

For me, although it is often likely to be different from other people, it is not okay to drink period. You are supposed to be able to do cool mind stuff. I.e. It may be better to eat healthy and avoid all forms of drugs and alcohol. Problem solved.

Never have before but 3 weeks ago I turned the dreaded 40, my girlfriend left me and on the way to a show I picked up a speeding ticket. I decided a few drinks would be the only way to stop myself ending it all right then. Client had put me up in a hotel so didn't have to worry about driving home. Got merrily drunk throughout the evening and all in all everything went well. I was slightly more verbose than normal and apart from a major fumble of a billet switch, which proved to me that clever techniques mean nothing if you have the misdirection, nothing went wrong. Still, I'll probably just stick to hard drugs in future.

I gave up drinking 7 years ago as I used to play in a bands for a living and with all the free booze I could see disaster looming!
But as a magician/mind reader I get offered alcohol by my clients all the time. If I did still drink I would feel it was acceptable to have one or two at certain events, but not weddings or corporate bookings, at least not until I had finished performing. Probably best not to get smashed at the children's hospitals either. But at more relaxed parties where I am offered all the time I think it could add to the effect of the material in a sophisticated way, especially a glass of red wine or a spirit. I think however this would be best towards the end of the evening, where the lines between performing and socialising can become blurred and more intimate performances are a common occurrence. Sometimes I end up at a table with people enjoying genuine conversation which is broken up by performing effects here and there. |
