A rookie question, what are some alternatives to the Goshman Pinch? Thanks!

Probably not what you want to hear but to my mind the Goshman pinch is not really that hard and quite dependable...
you have to put some work in at the start of course..but it is a 100% completed sleight..once the coin gets there its there and secured.

I don't want to sound too trite but stay with it a bit each day and you will find that it will be yours quite quickly... I have learned it 20 years ago and if for anything as an out or a needed precaution it is indispensable.

I too vote for learning

It has severed me well since learning it in Goshman lecture
in 76.
Back then I knew next to nothing about coins
Now I know even less.

I love and use the move regularly, and think it is easier to do and just as deceptive as any relative-type moves like it. I think it's more appropriately known as the Tenkai Pinch but I'm sure you'll get the deeper story on that here.

It really is a very comfortable move to make when you get used to it. Not to mention that it can be accomplished by most any hand size (with perhaps appropriate coin size adjustments), while other such moves can be much more difficult to attain under these dynamics. But as to an "alternative" David mentions one in the Back Palm.

Oh, and welcome to the Café. Smile

Have a look in the book Sleight of Hand by Edwin Sachs - there are options.
Deep Back Clip is also an option - see Ganson's book The Art of Closeup Magic volume 1 for Vernon's item.
Others have moved to EG type concealments ... ultimately depends on where your audience is and your performing style.

I would recommend also learning the Schneider Basic vanish. The psychology is the same and both rely on the "predictive vision" principle. Both methods can be interchanged to advantage.

However, both should follow an establishment of a Pattern of an actual transfer using the same hand positions. The observer's mind is trained to see the coin travel over and with when it is not there at all.

In fact, under the right routine flow the Pitch (or drop) can be executed with no coin in hand at all -- and the spectator will still "see" it.

Since the "best" vanish is one where "the coin never was" this Pitch can be part of several extraordinary effects in which both hands are shown absolutely clean.

I started learning the Goshman Pinch last Saturday, yesterday I did live in a restaurant for Greg Wilson's 3/4 across routine.

Lots if short practice sessions each days helped.

Other pinches are usable, but I wanted to do another 'clean' coin routine instead of relying on my coin unique all the time.

For fun and variety try it with other than half dollar size coins.

Using a USA penny and English penny you can get some nice
Visual eye candy

For you advanced workers try it with a penny and dime (USA) or other two small sized currency.

Throw in other stuff
Palm to Palm
Pin... Vanish
One or 2 handed stuff

The Goshman pinch is a misnomer. It is really the Tenkai pinch. There are many other worthwhile concealments, but it depends on what you need to do. Bono lists some, the Encyclopedia of Coin Sleights has some, and Coinmagic and Roth's Expert Coin Magic discuss some. You can see many types of concealments used in the NYCMS DVD series.

Showing your age. Nowadays U2's lead singer is more likely to come to mind.
And even then, they're a band from the '80s Smile

When I was a teen tried to learn the Tenkai pinch and gave up. Three years ago, at 50, I decided to try again with success. More patience? More practice? Who knows. If you get frustrated, table it for awhile and try again... I'd suggest days and not years. It's a great slight.
