Hey everyone. I am wondering...do you transition from one effect to the next with a related effect? Think Ipswich followed by H*gst@ne. Or do you use scripting for the transition?
I think it can be done well either way And I am needing some interesting discussion on this. Either Max Maven or Bruce Bernstein published a book about this but not sure which or the title. |

Think about developing an opening monologue that deals with the theme of your show. But that also requires you to have effects that stay with in the "world" that you are trying to create. And a closing statement helps too. Your first 30 seconds and what impression you leave them with is just as important as your effect (may even be more important).
I use scripting throughout, including segues between effects. But in the least, have an opening and closing even if you only bounce from one effect to another. |

I prefer something like, "for my next trick, I shall use this completely ordinary haunted diary which I keep in this old, strange looking box with an old brass bell in it, also completely ordinary..."
Maybe I should work on my transitions... :) |

Personally, my witch show uses h@gst0ne to find someone with 'witch blood', who nominally then has a thematic and genetic connection to the spirits that haunt 1psw1ch.
I try to make the effects link and build on each other, but then reinforce that with a thematic and narrative through-line. Story first, then find effects that support and enhance the narrative, then script the dialogue to ensure a compelling story. |

I like my stuff to flow. Then again I can do an hour with three effects and manage to keep it interesting. I mostly do my own thing with spooky mentalism that needs a certain amount of flow to it. I haven't done an entire "magic" show in over a year but I'm feeling the itch to do double lifts with tarot cards and cause bones to turn into live mice etc.
I remember several years ago I did Gypsy Monte, thread from my leg lol and PK touches at a dinner party. The only thing that tied it together was a spooky atmosphere. The hosts along with their guests and myself spent the next two hours talking about shadow people and strange stuff. They were thoroughly entertained so I'm wondering how much all the expensive advice from lectures and books is really based on performing experience or what would "seem" like the correct way to do it. |

Thank you Seethings. I'll look at it.
I've moved and trying to get some things going in a new place. Very difficult and stressful. Cold weather doesn't help |

For me I tend to only use 1 or 2 routines in the whole show when performing spooky so the transition is not as important to me because the routines are built off each other.
for instance if I was to use say...Luna I would only have that one commercially available prop in the show the rest would be things like guided visualization and a picture force using another sitter.....they all climax with the sitter correctly describing what is on the picture chosen by the other sitter proving they have connected with that spirit in the luna room............. |
