I am helping my brother build a project for his physics class and I am looking for something that I think would also be helpful in magic.
What I am trying to do is find a small motor that is turned on and off by remote. The remote system needs to be rf not inferred. I have a motor so I need something that goes between the motor and the battery that can turn it on and off with a remote. I have gone to radio shack and they do not have anything that works completely off of batteries. They had one that you plugged into the wall and then had a remote to turn a lamp on and off. I tried to modify a remote doorbell system but that did not work either. I have thought about modifying my snake basket so that I would have a smaller remote. If anyone can help me find what I am looking for then I would greatly thankful. Thanks, Tim Gaines |

You can use the remote units in toy cars. But watch out for other items on the same frequencies.
Also auto alarms are low voltage. They run on 12 volts.

Tim,
To answer your first question, look at this website for a keychain remote and receiver. http://www.x10-store.com/rfkeychreph.html These sorts of things are offered by many home security companies. A Google search for "RF remote home security" will probably turn up several sources. As to your second question, I have a Viper snake basket from Terry Lunceford (the lower-priced basket with the larger remote). I wanted to try and come up with a smaller remote without investing a lot of cash, so I called Terry and asked for his advice. He couldn't have been more helpful. He told me that the remote assembly was from a toy car, and he even gave me the frequency. I found a cheap R/C car at Wal-Mart that was on the same frequency, took the guts out of the transmitter (the board was about 1x1½ inches), and reinstalled the transmitter board and a pushbutton into a very small mini-box from Radio Shack. I would think that one of the keychain remotes would be a much more elegant solution. Just look for one that works on the same frequency, or buy the transmitter/receiver combo from one of the Internet sources. Hope this helps, Amos McCormick P.S. When you see the weather along the east coast, aren't the Louisiana summers worth the discomfort?

Bill,
I have been looking into small remote control cars. I still have not found what I am lookin for but thanks for that input. I am going to look into the car alarm systems. Amos, I looked on the website you listed. Do you know if there is a system that the reciever would turn on and off a 9-volt battery. The ones on the website seem to have to plug into an outlet. I need to turn on and off a motor that will be run by a 9-volt battery. Also to answer your question about the weather here in Louisiana, I would much rather it be hot than cold. I do not know how some of you live were it gets that cold. I say this on a day when it was 20 degrees this morning in Baton Rouge. That is pretty cold for us. Thanks for your help, Tim |

Tim,
I know exactly what you are looking for. I am not sure but Marcelo Contento used to sell this in his website for about US$70. http://www.marcprod.com/id27.htm The brand is "Visonics Ltd". It is made in Israel. These are as small as your car remote device. Just do a search and find a dealer in your area. These are not normally sold in common shops because it is easy to make a remote device to trigger explosive devices and such. Good Luck!

Try this website:
http://www.oatleyelectronics.com/remote.html They seem to have a lot of small transmitter/receiver combos that operate on 9-12VDC. You can also print out the specs to see whether this is what you are looking for. Amos McCormick

I hope someone here can help me resolve a problem I have with my remote control. I tried to modify a wireless door chim to activate the glo-plug on my Flash pot unit. I removed the 2 wires that connect to the speaker and connected them to the glo-plug. Althought the unit shoots out 3VDC but the ampere is really low. It can not turn on the glo-plug. I wonder is there any other way I can modify the output? Please advise or point me to any thread that cover this. Thank you so much. Ken knmagic@yahoo.com

Do not use remote control on any pyro device. It is too dangerous as anything could set it off.
I have heard of guys taking the remotes out remote controlled (pardon me but I don't know what else to call it) fart machines. For a good reliable unit, go with Marcello Contente's unit.
