If you want a good method of marking your birds to tell them apart. Get a pack of tiny knitting plastic split rings. They are the perfect size to put on the leg of your birds. They come in different colors, so by color coding you can remember their names.
You put the ring on the leg according to gender, right leg for male and left leg for female. |

Hey Someone buy Servant a Snail!!
Bill that's a great tip......I get the bands on ebay and they are numbered. I have tagged my doves by generation and number, Each generation we are on the 3rd now are a different color and the numbers help with their names. |

At my kid shows through the 1980's and 90's, my dove's name was Gregory.
His last name was Peck. Back then, there were still enough parents who at least recognized the name enough to get the pun and give me the groan. A few years later, all I got were blank looks.

Thinking about the time my Wife and I assisted Ken & Bert Griffin - they had 2 guinea pigs - so the could have 1 appear someplace else(?) at the end of the season, 1 guinea was twice as big as the other - they thought they had 2 males - turns out we had a male and female - Ha Ha Ha RR

Yeah keeping track of animal gender can be a challenge and then a surprise......
I recently got 2 chickens and I'm training them to select a card. I went to a farm that does genetic testing to check gender to make sure I didn't end up with a rooster, boy would that anger the neighbors every morning! I have a white Silkie chicken named Obi One Henobi and a brown one named Hen Solo. Genetic confirmation that they are female and as a side benefit, the eggs are yummy. First thing I have the chicken do when its introduced is to walk across my table over a small plastic strip that looks like a road.....and patter is, " well that had to be dealt with before anything else..." I have six doves (three male and three female) and a rabbit (male), my rabbits name is Pucky fatness (fatness was added after he got to big to fit in my top hat). My doves are named (female) Virdy, Tippi, and Rey , (Male) Spirit, Sid and Lando.
All of them are pets and I love having them in my shows! And yes some of them are named after Star Wars characters. Jonah |
