Hi Friends,
This is another of my not-so-stupid-but-definitely-worth-ROFL questions. I've been performing Gregory Wilson's effect Ringside for long. I'm a ring guy, and have a ring on my left ring finger all the time. If I have a coin on me, or am able to borrow one from the onlookers, this is the opener I perform most of the times. It's short, it's sweet, and it kills ! It brought me good reactions, in spite of the fact that I don't know how it works ! It's not about the mechanism (I nailed them down before performing for people of course !), but about the thinking chain of the viewers while I perform. During the offbeat, the spectators actually "see" the switch in their peripheral vision, but what do they think after that? Without giving away much on the secret, I believe that though subconsciously they're aware of the switched locations of the ring and the coin, but when I go into the third phase, don't they also know that I took the ring off openly? They also saw me throwing something into my left hand before the third phase begins, and when I ask them to look closely at the coin in my left hand, they surely know that it's not the ring but the coin I have in the left hand. Yes I know that the effect is apparently complete for the viewers after the second phase, until I go into the third phase, so I can obviously take off the ring and start for my home. But once the third phase starts, I want to know what they're thinking. After I performed this for a friend for the first time, I asked him to describe what he saw. He said, "you placed the coin into your left hand a couple of times, and it jumped back to your right hand immediately. You tried to do that one last time, but this time the coin stayed and the ring jumped instead." Though they're seeing the "dirty operation" in their peripheral vision, I believe that part is blacked out somehow in their chain of thought. Do the fellow performers of this effect think likewise? I perform this effect exactly as Gregory taught in his Random Lectures-I video. Currently I am thinking of altering a couple of moves to suit me better, but before that I need to understand how the viewers think while seeing this effect. Anybody helping me out there ? I guess I tried my best to present the query here, but if it's lacking somewhere, feel free to ask. I'll explain. Thanks in advance guys !!
Best,

It feels good that Gregory and I are the only two people on earth performing this effect !! Will be more sanguine once the view count reaches 100

I'm also not familiar.
Sounds like a combination of a Scotty York (ring used in coins across) and Slydini (also use of the ring) GW is a good magician, though to be honest, a lot of his stuff is like many of us, derivative of earlier works. Harris still 2 old to know it all

Simple, the audience just isn't attending to what your hands are doing becuase you are relaxed in the moment and it doesn't feel like you are doing anything sneaky (assuming its a rather fluid motion). Plus you are most likely directing their attention to what you are saying rather than what you are doing. People can only attend to so many things in their environment at once. You just have to make sure they arent attending to your 'moves' when they happen. We all 'black out' stimulus in our environment we don't attend to.

Hello Tian Den!
Would that more of our "fellow diners" in the Café could express themselves as well as you. De Yip Loo would be most proud of you!

What is Ringside? I have searched the Café for a reference and only find this thread. Searching the web finds nothing at all about it. Are you sure you have the name right?

I believe he is mentioning the trick that he taught in the At the Table lecture. Where the coin travels from one hand to another for a few times and then at the end instead of the coin traveling the ring travels onto the finger. This is startling cause in the start there is a mention of the ring grabbing their attention when the coin travels.
The last phase with the, "Any questions?" line it does give an offbeat to where you do the dirty move in front of them because of the relaxed moment. It's a great impromptu effect, I just don't where a ring, something I would do if I wore a ring though . |

Aha! OK, I haven't seen that one - I do have his Penguin lectures though.
Thanks for the info! Jim |

I have been performing this trick for a year and I never got caught. The spectators just won't see the move due to it being done in the offbeat. And they're too focused on the coin to think about the ring

I've got to say, I just went ahead and bought the At The Table lecture and I'm still working my way through it, but MAN!!!
The At The Table Lecture is so worth the extra $3! So much good stuff already! |
