Saskatchewan Power in Canada will open a $1.35 billion coal-fired electricity generating plant this year that will extract a million tonnes of carbon dioxide a year from its exhaust gases - the first carbon capture and storage plant of its type.
Looks like these coal plants..Now one in the US... can eliminate CO2 emissions by 90%... So let's burn more COAL!!!!! Would create millions of new jobs!!!!!

I still say that we need to advance tech to the point burning of anything is unnecessary. The market will eventually demand this.
Look at what Tesla has done. I never would have imagined it possible, and I am a 60s Detroit muscle car guy. Instead of trying to revamp hundreds of years old ideas I will support companies ushering in the new era of technology so I am not left figuratively holding a buggy whip in 1910. Tech advances. Why not embrace the new? Environmental concerns aside, advancement is a great thing. I don't mean by that advance and ruin the environment mind you. But if we can advance and sort of clean up our back yard so much the better right?

Oh I agree, just the other day I was thinking about people in the future looking back at us and stating "I can't believe they use to burn this!"; meaning that they had found a better way to release the energy contained within.

The plant you are referring to claims to reduce IT'S OWN carbon emissions by ninety percent- unlike other coal plants which are one of primary sources of CO2 emissions. So suggesting that we burn MORE coal to reduce emissions is ridiculous. No matter how you cut it, burning MORE coal will result in MORE carbon emissions. Whether an individual type of plant can reduce its own emissions is another issue entirely. The net result of burning more coal will, nonetheless, be a net increase in carbon emissions, together with the more strip mining, etc. |

As Bob pointed out coal mining and burning has costs to the habitable environment. no such thing as externalized costs in a closed ecological system. think bacteria in Petrie dish.

The major complaint of coal is that it emits CO2 ... This reduces that by 90%... How hard is that to grasp?????

With this new technology we can burn TEN TIMES as much coal as before without increasing the overall emission of CO2 if that is your concern (not mine). So begin building these awesome coal burning plants right away. Hundreds of Thousand of construction jobs and thousands to run the plants and CHEAP ENERGY for EVERYONE!!!!

Slim if your posts in NVMS have proven anything at all it is that your grasp of basic math is not quite as good as you think it is.

There's no free lunch. Every power generation scheme has it's cost to benefit ratio. Coal, being a non renewable resource, is probably not the future technology you'd want to invest in. It's a decent stop gap measure. But as vast as our coal deposits are. They are a finite resource. Best to spend future efforts that aren't dead ends.

It's NOT LOGICAL to assume just because something isn't renewable it shouldn't be used. There are over a million jobs in the non-renewable energy options. Get this country off of food stamps and foreign oil! It can happen in a year or two!

It's nice that coal burning CO2 reclamation technology is catching up with comparable mass-burn incinerator systems.
As with the latter, however, coal burning still leaves considerable solid waste (ash) to dispose of.
