Okay guys, it is finally here: the all new Light/Heavy box by Jay Mattioli. THIS IS HEAVY is Jay Mattioli's solution to many of the drawbacks that ALL the other versions of the classic "Light Heavy Chest" have in some way or another.
Hocus Pocus is very excited to have the exclusive on this fantastic new creation of Jays and it is online now and will be ready to ship later this week. This truly is the FINAL answer to the Light/Heavy box and this is by FAR the finest version we have EVER seen! Go to the link below to watch a live performance: http://www.hocus-pocus.com/magicshop/?p=27407 EFFECT: The perform invites a spectators on stage to help in a demonstration of muscle hypnosis. Seating the spectator on a small wooden stool, the magician "hypnotizes" that spectator into believing that a small silk handkerchief weighs over 1,000 lbs. An empty cardboard box is shown on all sides and placed on the wooden stool. A second spectator is now invited on stage and is asked to place the handkerchief in the box and then lift the box with its silk contents off the stool, which proves to be a simple feat. But when the hypnotized spectator attempts to lift the box he can not! It is simply too heavy for him to even budge! The second spectator can even reach in the box themselves and remove the hanky, which then allows the box to become light enough for the hypnotized spectator the lift off the stool. But whenever the hanky is placed back in to box, the hypnotized spectator can not lift the box one bit! This becomes a riot for kid show audiences as well as for adults. If you have ever wanted to perform Jean Robert-Houdin's Light Heavy Chest with ease, without worry, and with deceptiveness, this is the only reliable version you need!... THIS IS HEAVY! |

As seen in the demo video, this looks like a clever and nicely made prop/ props. Also the presentation is nice and entreating, both for the children as well as adults.
The wooden stool (the second prop) idea is nice but where children are involved, the stool with ladder like steps is not the right thing IMO. Besides the basic mechanics involved in the working of this effect, I do understand that standing on an inclined ladder like step also helps in taking away considerable mechanical advantage (by way of reducing ones lifting strength). But one must keep in mind that during the act the child’s both hands are involved in lifting of the box. Also the child’s concentration is on the act and is fully involved in lifting of the box. Hence one might like to look at other options instead of the ladder like stool. Just a though and opinion. However this is good thinking and very nice innocent looking idea in reviving an old prop.

Welcome back Professor Ustaad!
happy to read your reviews. i agree with your point of view about the ladder weak point. in any case it is a good prop for children entertaintment with perhaps some slight structure modifications. Very very happy for Ustaad coming back! an honour for the magic Café! |

One thought we had at Hocus Pocus was that this could be wrapped in birthday wrapping paper or Christmas wrapping paper to help you theme it for a specific show. Maybe the good kid has a heavy present... lots of ways to adapt it to your performing needs.

On Jay's you can see the bottom of the box. Gimpy's does not show that. I would also like to know if thay are the same? The price would be 600.00 less for Gimpy's but you would not have a step stool. Is the stool worth 600.00 ?? I do like the look of this and would be great for a lot of my shows. Can a man step up on the stool?
Posted: Sep 30, 2014 11:36 am Reading more about this on his store this sounds really cool. You don't even need to be near the box to make it heavy or not. I like that. |

There is no comparison. Jay's box does not work the same way as Gimpy's and I would be happy to explain the differences but I cannot post here as I cannot reveal the way this works on the Café. This box works in the same way as the original boxes from the 1800's, but this version has been greatly updated. Please PM me or read the ad copy on our website to understand the workings of Jays This is HEAVY.
http://www.hocus-pocus.com/magicshop/?p=27407 The weight capacity on the stool is 175 pounds. If you want detailed information please call us toll free at 800-407-4040 and I or any of our staff would be happy to help you. |

Cole,
How durable is the box? If it gets damaged can it be replaced?

ThE box is very durable. If it does get damaged or worn there is a way it can be rebuilt to keep it sturdy and available for use.
I hope that helps answer your question. Cole |

From the sounds coming from the audience, it most likely was presented at "kids" show. It would be even more funny and fun to have a child and adult person in the routine. The kid lifts the box and the adult can not. That does bring up a question, can this be used for an adult show. Say the wife can lift the box and husband can not? From Cole's description, there is a weight limit of 175 lbs., so I would have to say not it cannot, a $1000 is kid expensive for a kids only trick. Quote:

While you may not be able to use an adult male, you could as part of a comedy bit use and older sibling and a younger sibling, or even an adult woman vs. her child. Bully kid vs smaller child, or the kid that badgers you throughout your show. There are other options.
Just a few ideas. Cole |
