An interesting meeting I recently had with a local (San Diego) "SEO agency" resulted me in experiencing the horrendous underbelly and dark world of black hat seo tactics.
As a consultant I found the tactics really disheartening because it duped well-meaning small business owners. I wrote a blog post about it "4 Ways to Spot Black Hat SEO" http://clickconvertprofit.com/4-ways-to-spot-black-hat-seo/ Josh

In the past few months I've learnt many things about SEO.
Ranging from white hat to black techniques. I've joined many forums and asked questions in the hope of learning more about SEO in general. Within the past month or two I discovered two blogs that helped me understand the fundamentals of both white hat SEO but mainly black hat: http://www.viperchill.com/blog-network/ http://godofseo.ca/#axzz3EpS5r5DQ These two blogs have helped me learn about SEO in general but have also helped me understand blackhat. I don't think there is anything wrong with black hat SEO. It's like penalizing someone for taking a sports drink before a running race. Is it unethical? Possibly, after all it is giving him an edge above the other runners, but after all he is trying to beat the other runners, and that is his only goal.. Same with SEO. Is black hat unethical? Possibly, it may give us edge over our competition. But at the end of the day we are trying to compete with Google, that is out only goal. If we beat Google, we win. I wish to quote "Terry Kyle" another very experienced SEO I have learnt from in the past few months: "I don't believe in any type of hat in SEO (in regards to black hat, white hat etc) you either have SEO that works or it doesn't". I haven't used any black hat techniques to my website (as of yet) but I sure am thinking about it, after all, if you are not in to win, why are you in? |

Are we talking about "Nice guys finish last," or "The end justifies the means?"

Just thought I'd add one more thing.
From reading your post obviously these guys don't know what there doing. But black hat can work long term. If you have a strong PBN, use different registrars for each domain, different hoster for each domain, unique content for each domain, then you will never ever be discovered by Google. I've seen reports in a private skype group that I subscribe to, where a guy used SAPE and expired domains that pointed a 301 at his website that he just spammed the hell out of. He ranked within a week and stayed there for two years. Quote:

If we beat Google, we win. Truthfully I am not totally familiar with the techniques you speak of, and I am a big fan of "what is right for you may not be right for me," and vice versa. But if you are questioning the ethics of your own actions, that is what has me wondering about the end justifies the means. Again I speak only for myself, but taking actions for my business, or anything else in my life, that I worry about the ethics of, does not help me sleep at night.

I don't question the ethics at all. I don't think there is anything wrong with black hat.
I'm just saying that some people may find it unethical. Just like drinking a powerade before a sports event. One could argue that, that is unethical because it isn't using your natural sporting ability to win by giving you an artificial boost in energy. Same with SEO. |

Umm no it is not.
You look at it from your perspective and how it affects you only. Are there other people involved in this equasion?

Matt, I find it fascinating that you don't see a problem with black hat. I mean that in a sincere/curious sort of way not a snobby/condescending way.
Here's where I am confused: If you want to have a thriving business (no matter if you're a kids magician, corporate, trade show, whatever) why would you put yourself at risk of trying to "beat Google," while THEY are the ones who determine if your website even gets found online? Yes we can argue about paid search and social media and on and on, but trying to beat Google will not only get you penalized but worse not allow your website to be shown at all. Google has people much smarter than me, you, or anyone else on this whole forum working tirelessly every single day to give the most relevant, high quality information to their users and if they even sniff out that you're not playing by their rules you'll be gone. I'm curious about your friend who was doing so well for 2 years. When did that start and has his rankings changed at all? Josh Ps. Comparing black hat to Gatorade is not the right analogy. Black hat is like steroids - sure you'll get big and ripped, but that will only last for a short period of time until the "juice" wears off.

I respectfully disagree.
But that's okay everyone's entitled to their own opinion. The person I was speaking about was someone who started their website from scratch, I can't remember what the niche was but he showed proof of what he claimed and did. When I say "beat google" I don't mean it in the sense of trying to outsmart them. They have an algorithm, we as entertainers want to be at the top of that algorithm, black hat is just one of the many ways to get to the top. You are right that sometimes black hat is a very short term strategy, but not all the time at all. As I said if you have a PBN with domains on different registrars (aged domains of course(, different hosts, and unique content, there is no way that google can tell whether those links are false or real. You will never get caught (unless you leave a large enough footprint somewhere). Danny I don't quite understand what you mean. Regards Matt |

Yeah I had a feeling you'd say that haha
Ultimately that in my opinion was a little bit of a flop, it was once again all about the footprints. There is a post on it here: http://godofseo.ca/research/pbns-deindexed/#axzz3EpS5r5DQ |

As was stated by another on this thread you seem to think the ends justifies the means. You get what you want and in the end this is what matters. It does not seem to matter to you exactly how you get it. This is cool and it is a valid position to take if you like. I just disagree and 34 pages of back and forth won't change your mind. Be well.

It's a combination of the "me" generation and the instant gratification of "wanting it now" at whatever cost. For many today, this is justification alone. It is also what is damaging art as a whole.

Also keep in mind that people can report a page that uses Black Hat SEO. They don't have to wait for Google to discover it. I once saw a magician using Black Hat SEO, and I reported his page (there were things that he was doing that I felt were inappropriate). I'm willing to give a little bit of help to Google, to discover it faster.
