Hmm, looks like mindpro is trying to lure me to the fire. Are there marshmallows?
So at what point would a tactic become black hat? When Google starts penalizing it? I feel like it comes down to your intentions that determine your tactics. Are you trying to reach an audience of real people or are you trying to 1up Google? I've always been of the camp to write for your intended audience and offer up value and that's a good start.

I really like when there are differences of opinion shared here, as it provides a true learning environment. Despite the fact that at times the discussion departs from being constructive, disagreement on the issues is a good thing. Sometimes it is a matter of opinion or ethics, while other times it is a difference in the level of experience, knowledge and understanding of a topic. The discussions here tend to be more genuine and impactful than a real classroom environment because of the willingness of the members here to voice real opposition. The dynamics here are unique, and this is something I greatly appreciate and try not to take for granted. When the discussion turns to personal attacks, the dynamics of TMC start to work against us, meaning that learning stops.

WOW!!! I go away for a few weeks for work and come back to a thread on "Black Hat"
So lets simplify it... White Hat SEO = following what search engines call best practices (problem is these change) Black Hat SEO = Trying to GAME the system, using spammy techniques, some (not many) are even ILLEGAL Black Hat SEO is named that way because its a loophole in the algorithm that lets you game the search engine. The problem with that? Google has 250 guys with doctorates with about 50 guys each on there team who all make approx. 5 tweaks to the algorithm a day. They even have an "SEO WATCH" team which is 50 guys who surf and crawl all the SEO forums looking for "Black Hat" strategies that break the rules to suggest updates to the algorithm. So Black Hat SEO changes just as fast as the search engines and you will spend more time chasing updates than you will just doing it RIGHT the first time.. so lets take this OUT of OPINION.. I have SEO hosting.... with 1000 seperate c-class IP addresses I have MANY (over 200) websites that we use to TEST alorithm changes. In the past I have had close to 100 domains DEINDEXED due to a Google Penalty (from TESTING) So you can say Black Hat WORKS all you want, but the penalties do as well. I constantly test the Updates and charge BIG MONEY (10k +) to do Google Penalty recovery. If you use KNOWN SPAM techniques to promote your "money" site, your putting your business at risk. Also doing it right gets better results anyway. Doing it right = Launched a new site on Friday last week. Targeted over 100 keywords Due to Silo being properly setup already have 72 top 5 listings and 106 front page listings. PS. Please save my contact info for when you do get penalized. Fixing stupid SEO shortcuts is what pays all my staffs salary...

Mike I loved your last sentence. I had a brother in law who is loved by a plumber and a carpenter. He "thinks he knows" and invariably causes more problems than he fixes! Why is it cheaper short cuts always come out more expensive and take longer?

The crazy part about the Black Hat Debate is
1. Black hat is simply put SPAM 2. SPAM is poor marketing and has LOW conversion 3. It's now MORE labor intensive than just doing it right 4. it's SPAM 5. It's easier to learn REAL marketing short cutting marketing leads to bad marketing... spend the time and do it right

Mike, if you use "seo hosting" that is a red flag. The separate class c's make no difference. Many SEO's using that as a "strategy" have had their entire networks de-indexed. Using domains with that type of hosting to test algorithmic changes and or loopholes will skew your results.

Not if they are on separate servers..
The blog networks got killed because they had a footprint. Google owns the patten on a system that tracks IP addresses attached to Mac addresses.. Meaning when you have a blog network on SEO Hosting with multiple blogs on similar topics Your leaving a footprint... none of our network has similar sites on the same server.. not only that none of them are a blog network we even saw a 15% increase in rankings the last algorithm update. but your right... if your running a pbn (private blog network) c-class hosting does nothing for you, it can get you nailed... You need separate Mac addresses also.. Also MOST SEO's don't have a clue, met one this week who had no clue who Matt Cutts is.

Within a host company's network, sequential addresses of servers are "tells."
Glad to hear, Mike, that you've suffered no major Google spanks. I, too, remain unscathed. One last thing...Matt who? |
