I was thinking about trying the Bride of the Blades effect. I've been a professional magician for 20 years and never actually done an illusion before. I have a client that wants me to end a show in a couple of weeks with an illusion and we have narrowed it down to "something with swords, and the girl is gone".

I know this sounds somewhat insipid but the client is in Europe and there is a bit of a language barrier. Anyway, I spoke with Paul Osborn (nice guy) and he recomended the box of blades but that doesn't have the disappearnace aspect that my client wanted. Then I found this bride of the blades trick description and it sounds like what I'm looking for.

I guess my question is have you ever worked with this illusion? and if so what is your experience? How does it handle? and how is it recieved?

any input would be welcome.

I haven't used one but you might want to see if you can get some correspondence going with guy selling one on Magic Auction: http://www.magicauction.com/Mag_auc/illusion_pg3.htm
It's about half-way down the page.

When he originally put it up for sale, I sent an e-mail to him via Magic Auction and he answered my questions. (He worked with Paul Osborne.) He should be able to give you some good information on it.

If the client wants "something with swords and the girl is gone!" you'd better make sure she vanishes after the swords go in. Otherwise, he has every right not to pay you.

The Temple of Benares is a very easy illusion to build and it has everything your client is asking for.

Here is a variation of the blade of the brides built by my illusion company for our show. We changed the Osborne look a bit and made it for a circus theme illusion segment.Totally redesigned the base. Many magicians haven't seen how good this looks with the front doors open so here is a picture from the one I use in our illusion show.
As for how well it plays, well admittely it's not the strongest illusion in the world but the aspect of opening the door to show the chamber empty is the kicker.
You can play this like the blade box, and put the girl in, run in the blades and spin it and act like that is the trick. At best you will get polite applause. Then you open the door and show it empty...the response is usually gasp of disbelief and it then gets a good round of applause. Just my experience with it.
