True- But it's really a good idea to understand the reasoning behind different so-called "rules" before deciding to break them.

I have my own rules that I've carefully thought out over forty years of performing. I'm merely suggesting that it might be a good idea to try to understand the reasoning behind them before rejecting them out of hand.

I understand. And guys like Uri Geller have their own rules which they will probably NEVER reveal. So it's up to us to analyze the level of their success and make a choice.

The Golden rule is there are no golden rules… there would never have been a Picasso if he'd have stuck to the rules of the time…. but you can be sure that Picasso knew what the rules where. His choice to break those rules was from an informed position.
To paraphrase Bob, before you throw away the knowledge and experience of those that have successfully set the bar high in the standards of performance and success, it's beneficial to have an understanding of what it is you are choosing to discard or set aside. Personally I don't think Bob has given us a set of rules…. rather I think he has provided a valuable blue print in the form of a set of rationales and reasons for a process that can be applied in unique ways by different individuals to find the path that is most likely to maximise the potential of your character and on stage persona. As such it's not the end word on the subject… however it is a huge and important contribution to the subject and as such it is something that everyone interested in performing mentalism (and IMHO mental magic too) would be well advised to study and understand before choosing not to apply the same principles to the development of their own character and onstage mentalist's persona.

...the first night uri stayed at Puthoff's house when he flew over to be tested, down that street - a lampost bent overnight...you can be absolutely sure that uri and others know ALL the rules, and thought long and hard about them before choosing which to keep, what to improve upon, and what gaps needed plugging with new rules...

But I have read enough conflicting advice from all kinds of working pros that I now realize you can make it work pretty much anyway you want if you have good performing skills. I personally think it's better to have a consistent persona with consistent effects, but I have been listening to Ben Cumming's excellent "Conversations with Mind Readers." http://conversationswithmindreaders.com/ 32 different mind minders, 32 different opinions. Some agree with the idea of a consistent persona, some do not. Some believe in using a disclaimer, some do not. |

Bob is right. Rules are guidelines and can certainly be broken. Faucett Ross actually gave examples of famous magicians doing exactly that. However, you should know the rules and think carefully before you break them. There has to be a good reason that you are breaking them and bear in mind also that there is probably a good reason for them being there in the first place.

I would be all in favor of deferring to the presumptive wisdom of the rules -- and breaking them only for good reasons -- if the rules were uniform among the experts. The frustrating thing for neophytes is that if leading experts offer rules that conflict with each other then it seems to be impossible to defer to the rules without figuring out which of the two experts is correct. Which is precisely what the newcomer wants to avoid by learning and deferring to the rules in the first place!

A neophit should follow the rules put forth by his or her favorite performer. Then break them only when they have enough experience to know that they have a good reason.
Reality is a real killjoy.

I asked Jon Tremaine, a noted mentalist of the day, about this and I recall that he said something along the lines of use good judgement and common sense. And you should remember that what suits one person may not suit another. I do think a beginner should stick to one source of knowledge that he or she respects and follow the wisdom of that particular person until he or she gets more experience. But remember that a lot of the basic rules are not generally contradicted and are considered standard wisdom, such as don't tell how a trick is done, never repeat a trick, don't mix mentalism with magic etc;. These are very good rules for a beginner to follow yet some respected experts don't necessarily agree with them. I have seen Richard Osterlind state in print that the "never repeat a trick" rule is faulty and he gives his well thought out reasons for it. I believe you CAN and perhaps even SHOULD, in some cases, mix mentalism with magic and the masked magician and every teenager on you tube seems to think that exposure is perfectly fine. This can be very confusing to a neophyte so I would advise sticking to the standard wisdom until you are experienced enough and good enough to question it. And have good well thought out reasons for questioning it. Here is an example. I always went by the standard wisdom that hypnosis was a genuine phenomena on stage and in therapy situations. However, once I began to think for myself and research a bit I decided to go against this standard wisdom and now believe hypnosis as it is usually defined does not exist. Keep the rules as a guideline especially when you first start. Once you get a vibe that you know what you are doing then change the rules if you REALLY think it wise to do so but only after considerable thought. |

Thanks for all the great tips I like what you were both saying about taking it slow and sticking to one main set of rules. Then when you have wisdom in this you must change them or keep them the same. I respect Bob the most so I think its going to be fundamentals for the main rules I stick to. Is that what you all meant. By the way I'm the type that will learn the basics really well so this makes sense for me. And the best thing I love about mentalism is that the basics are the best things you can possibly do and there is where it comes down to presentation. That is what I bought Fundamentals for in the first place. Very excited to learn more. I will be researching the out of this universe book further because when I finally am a psychologist my character may need renovating.
