I'm looking to build on to my Impossible Hank routine.
The effect I'm trying to identify / find is where the magician is holding a silk hank, throws it in the air and it flies off into the wings of the stage. Is this a commercial effect or is it just a case of using any type of locking reel ? Many thanks for your time.

Hi Guy!
I think that is part of the Dancing Hank routine from long ago, using an assistant (Can't remember if that's Blackstone's or John Calvert’s, where the silk flies offstage...gotta look that one up), and yes, you could use a reel, but a windlass is better suited for long hauls. The background is important for such effects, plus I agree, it's a great way to build on the Impossible Hank! Great stuff! Good Luck! Doug |

Hi Doug,
Can't decide if my question was too hard or the answer too obvious. But thanks for the tip about a windlass. Suppose I should have said that I work without an assistant. Been reading some of your other responses to 'Dancing Hank' type questions and they are very useful too. And yes it does help if you are an animated performer to get the best out of Sean's UDH as it does with IH. But again being an actor is part of our armoury isn't? Kind Regards Paul

Guy,
The question is not to hard, it is that there is no answer to your question. This is just an idea that someone put in his routine. It is not a trick (stand alone presentation) it is something we sometimes refer to as a "bit", something just thrown in to amuse the audience. If you do not work with an assistant then you would have to make up a remote control unit, and no there are no plans available. It is something only for stage that has "wings" off of each side. Everything you see in magic is not necessarily available for sale. Years ago magicians never revealed any of their secrets. Many have taken very good secrets to their gave with them. Thus, the magic society has lost some great thinking. Bill |

Hi Bill,
Thanks for your helpful reply. I know that I've seen it performed by a couple of magicians (one of whom may have been Blackstone Jr)and no doubt I have it in my video library somewhere. I appreciate it's a 'bit' but think that it will help to develop the character of the IH in the minds of the children if I can use it (appear to)in more than one spot in the show. Interesting that you should mention a remote because I also have a 'look-a-like' silk hank draped over an Anverdi rising card and 'Sammy' - my IH' pops up behind me on the table (apparently without my knowing) and leans over to one side - just as the real IH leans to one side or the other. I also use Bob Little's 'flying hank?' - the one on a TT to imitate the IH before it makes its final appearance and takes a bow. So they all form parts of a running gag. Hence, I'm seaking different ways of appearing to use the IH. PS my actual name is the other way round without the de so, Kind regards and good night because its 11.00 pm over here in the UK. Paul

Paul,
Maybe the stealth retactor by John Kennedy will work for you. It is battery operated and has a very long line. It is not cheap, but not as expensive a the Thurston Windlass which is a collectors item only. Of course what you are asking needs a stage and a person off stage in the wings. |

Paul, of course you haven't that is why you are seeking advice on the Café, right? Here is an address of one dealer, many should carry it.
http://www.dennymagic.com/cgi-bin/hazel.......m=003551 It is ony $60 that is more then cheap enough for your effect. The same size silk as your Waltzing Matilda will work good. |

Check Sean Bugonia's Impossible Hank (His improvement on Don Wayne's system includes this facility and allows the hank to dance in a bottle much as Ralph Adams envisioned and performed.)
While Calvert's take on the Casper Routine could be used as you described its charm is elsewhere. DC and Lance B have both used versions of this theme -- see if you can see DCs haunted House with its ghosts!
