Hi mentalmagicgerman,
I'm assuming this would be someone who's never seen you perform before? I often find that if I can only do 1 effect I prefer to actually do something simple. It seems to fit "my character" better. Let me explain - as I learn more and more and progress with my Mentalism I find believability to be a crucial building block in terms of creating the experience I want to go for. For someone like me, it makes sense to start off with a simple divination of say a zodiac sign (1/12) or a prediction like positive negative (1/6)... And then build towards more genuine mind reading experiences... You may me much further along than I (I'm horrible at pw) but I've noticed that revealing a family name or something personal works a lot better after I've established myself... I have to gently guide the spectator along the path towards mind reading because I'm not at the level where I can just open with something stunning. I don't have the gravitas yet to pull that off. With that said I've had great luck doing one offs like the following: ProMystic mini MD with zodiac divination Seven (bryn Reynolds) Divining a freely selected song off their iPhone. Good luck my friend. |

That's how I read it too.
As to the original question I couldn't begin to answer it as it is fully dependant on the situation, the audience, what I have with me and even my own mood. My go to effects that I can always do without any props or prep are getting to know you (my own propless version), wish you were here, star sign PA, Isobella's star, PK touches, prevaricator, and pretty much anything involving billets as I can usually find something to write on. Oh and iunlockyourmind because I always have my phone with me. Mark |

And once again the high school jock bully mentality sets in, and they can't wait to beat up the new kid. The amount of badgering many if you engage in is very disappointing. While I understand we get frustrated seeing the same old posts, do you not realise that new people wander in from time to time? Not everyone has the experience, knowledge and insight many here have. So how about showing a little compassion instead of seizing the first opportunity to pick on someone. If someone proves to be a "troll" them fine. But just because someone is excited and new does not mean they deserve to be ridiculed. Yes YOU were all that noob once too.
If you aren't willing to point someone in the right direction, or you just don't feel like sharing any information, how about just leaving them alone? Bullying sucks in any capacity. But we all know how easy it is while sitting behind a key board.

Where, exactly, do you see "bullying" in this thread? |

Bob - calling the guy a troll. Which I believe was meant for him and not you. And the always present comments mentioning how stupid someone's question is, or pointing out for all to see how "silly" his question is. You can read through this thread as easily as I can. Or almost any other thread. If the whole point of posting a response is to ridicule, embarrass or pick on someone, then that's bullying.
But one thing I have learned is that a bully will be the last to admit he is one. You all know this is a regular occurrence. Unfortunately, I know it will never stop. But it upsets me to see it done, especially when the recipient has done nothing to warrant it.

Sbays-
I can't be positive, but I really think that Magical Dimensions WAS referring to me because I had just posted a silly answer about using a garbage can and a volley ball for a stage version of the pea can. The OP's post certainly didn't seem like a troll to me. Just a pretty standard question that's really impossible to answer because so much depends on the individual performer, the venue and everything else I mentioned in my initial answer. After two more serious posts, the thread took a good natured jocular turn. If there was a misunderstanding here, though, it could have easily been avoided if Magical Dimensions had just quoted the post that he was actually responding to. Failure to do that often results in miscommunications around here it seems. But if you honestly believe that I "bullied" the OP by pointing out that the question really has no helpful answer, and then later by posting the Monty Python "silly" clip, I really don't know what to tell you. I certainly didn't think of it as "bullying" at all since the first direct answer I gave him represents my honest opinion and was intended to give him an idea about the various factors that would influence any possible answer. But if the OP, or anyone else, took my comments as "bullying," I certainly apologize. I try my best (most of the time) to give helpful answers, even if those answers aren't always the ones a questioner wants to hear. Good thoughts, Bob |

I also thought the troll comment was jokingly directed at Bob.

Perhaps Bob was right when he suggested that the 'Troll' comment could have included the quote. That would have avoided any confusion. Perhaps next time.

Bob - If the "troll" comment was intended for you, then I will be happy to know I was mistaken. However, that was just part of it. And to clarify Bob, while I found your reply to be a little sharp, especially for someone who most likely doesn't know you or your personality that well, my comments really were not directed towards you per say. I actually agree with almost everything you said in your response. But someone totally new to the game is not going to be able to find the gold in that wisdom. When dealing with someone new to the craft, I feel we should treat them more along the lines of the way we would treat a spectator or participant. Although we have seen this stuff thousands of times, perhaps it is their first.
Years ago when I met my childhood hero Lou Ferrigno, I was beyond excited. He was appearing at a convention, and I went specifically to meet him. I stood in line for almost an hour, and got to his table, paid him his 30 bucks for an autographed picture, and decided to ask him a question about the show. He stared at me for what seemed like 30 minutes, then put his hand out rubbing his fingers together making the universal, "Give me money" gesture and then said, "If you aren't with the press, questions are an additional 30 bucks. If you don't have it move out of line". In one fleeting moment, my childhood hero was erased and had become an individual I loathed. I tore that autographed picture up right in front of him and threw it in his table, and told him exactly what he could go do with himself. A sore spot for me. Anyway, my point is I think we should all strive to be nice until it's time to not be nice. It really can and does effect people sometimes. I am not saying we give the keys to the kingdom to someone new or hasn't shown that they deserve it, but we can still be kind and either nudge them in the right direction, or just be silent and let them find their own way. Mean snarky comments don't do anyone any good, except perhaps to please the person making them.

I don't know why you people give it such importance to who's the troll, I honestly thought it was to Bob.
Maybe you should just stop speculating and let Magical Dimensions to clarify things. So, ¿who did you call troll, Ray?

I felt I gave an honest answer. If I'd have told him to send me thirty bucks for the answer, I'd deserve to have my picture torn up.
I must admit, though, that I have a much better idea about how to talk to someone when he has introduced himself, told us something about his involvement with mentalism, how long he's been performing, etc., than I do when someone just basically pops into the group under a pseudonym, without a pic or a profile, and starts asking questions. But since the OP joined the Café last December, he's said very little about himself and many of his questions have been variations of "What is the best...," "What is your favorite?" etc. Here's one of his first posts: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......537693#0 I think he should know by now that this question, or variation of it, gets asked all the time. So, yeah. Maybe I did get a little sharp. |

My Ferrigno Anecdote was to simply illustrate that, when there is someone you really look up to and admire, it really sucks when they treat you as if you are beneath them, like just another plebe.
I will use you as an example Bob. I look up to you a great deal. I consider you a General in this Mentalism world. I don't think anyone would disagree with that. Along with that comes a LOT of influence. As Uncle Ben would say, "With great power comes great responsibility.". As far as pseudonyms etc goes, not everyone feels the need to put their pictures up, real names etc. I do understand it helps with recognition and all of that, but just because they opted not to does not mean they are hacks. I joined the Café back in 2002. I have been around a long time. When I originally created my account, I just simply put in a username that I typically used in most of my online profiles. That being said, if I wouldn't have to lose my account and start over, I would update my profile with my info. My good friend Greg Arce told me once years ago to do that very thing. lol Anyways, have a good day everyone.

Lol yeah pw is not easy!
I know yet another thread has been derailed but I touched on this very topic in my not so popular postings in another thread (which I'm trying to let die). I think some of us assume the best when a newish poster posts. Some of us assume the worst. We all view things through our own lenses, our own experiences. I'm glad we have the elder statesmen who keep things in check. I'm glad we have the opposing forces as well, posters who try to encourage others even at the risk of repetition or bogging down threads that have been answered already. It's the yin and the yang of the Café. |

I find it interesting that the topics of billets came up. While I wouldn't mind writing on one as a prediction, I wouldn't feel comfortable doing a routine where I have to secretly ascertain information of a spectator writing onto a billet.
If I only have 1 routine to do (in this intriguing hypothetical scenario) I feel the spectators only place to go would be "somehow he saw what I wrote down". However after easing them into the concept of what we do with "simpler" routines, I find a great ct, peek, b----- sw---- can do wonders. |

Actually, I do that all the time. Over fifty percent of what I do is billet work. With logical disconnects and offbeat timing I'm quite comfortable having a participant write a question on a billet (while my back is turned) fold it up, initial it and hold it tightly in his fist- at which time I turn to face him and give a direct answer to his question.
The problem is solved simply by adding elements that make the idea that I could have seen what he had written seem completely impossible. But I agree with you for another reason. The routine's not quick enough to open with. I'd lead in with a much quicker, albeit slightly less ambitious, effect. |
