I like the Phoenix marked decks too. They maintain a nice balance of deceptiveness and usefulness.
In others words, the specs won't see the marks, but I will. the Blaine Marked decks were a nice deal when they were available. |

Thanks, Eric, for letting us know your opinion on the subject.
While I now like "The Code", I'll have to look at Boris Wild's deck again. That's the only other one that I have out of your Top 4.

The 1800 cards are beautiful for $6.95. They are great for the mentalist and/or bizarre entertainer, but as a mark deck, they' are garbage !

Great information here. Thank you guys. I should have checked in on the MC before ordering 4 packs. Love the vintage 1800's for certain routines. They should include a jeweler's loupe with each deck. Total waste as a marked deck. You cannot see the marks if the card is more than an inch away. Nobody noticed this prior to production? So far I like the Ultimate Marked Deck the best. Marks for both value AND suit in one location unlike the BW marks which are too spread out requiring multiple focal points. Unnecessary step for simply designating the suit. imo.

The Marks are extremely small and well hidden on this deck. My wife, who know I was using a MD couldn't spot them KNOWING where to look. I use 1800s in most of my card routines just because they are beautiful. This deck requires practice and study. Once you get the patterns down it is pretty easy to spot honestly. I have to disagree and recommend this deck.
I have even performed drun....seeing double and been able to read the mark. |

I have the DMC (£15) and Fournier (red and blue backed, 2 decks for £12) both are excellent, I have used them to baffle fellow teachers and nobody has spotted anything. The Fournier is great because you take heat off by building up with an ungimmicked deck

Did they change the markings on the 1800 vintage? On the ellusionist homepage, the placing of the markings changed.
You can see it on the pics. |

Yes, customers reported having a really hard time reading the first set of markings. So they changed it to something that's easier to see from a distance, but still very well hidden to someone who doesn't know they're marked.

Bicycle red 1800s deck. Amazing looking! Nearly impossible to read and that is while wearing glasses!
The ultimate decks would be for DMC and Phill Smith to bring out decks made to look old, using their m*****g system, aged similar to the 1800s deck. Imagine an Alphas deck aged like the 1800s deck. They would be outstanding decks of cards. I would not have to use my glasses to read them either! If only a dream could become reality!!! |

Huh. I love the 1800s and find the marks easy to read (and harder for anyone to spot). I'm disappointed that Ellusionist seems to have discontinued the 1800s. I love using them, and people always assume that they really are old cards, which makes them useful and even more fooling in presenting effects where I seem "careless" about the cards, while caring very much what's happening.

Another vote here for the 1800s, I've had a deck or two. I agree that the markings aren't that good, especially if you're eyes aren't as good as they used to be. No comparison to the DMCs as to clarity, but their look is really majestic. Doubt if they would make the DMCs like that, as it would take away from their uniqueness in bringing out something that someone else came out with, but it would be nice, and Im sure folks would buy them. But, I never liked the markings, just t small and nt clear enough. They were never given high marks for it. Much better to have readers, like the Penguin Marked Cards that are much easier to see. I think, in this new day, they came to better realize, that most people that used marked cards were not sitting down at a card table to cheat at poker, but more so just doing a little magic with them, where specs have no idea of the deception.
Also, I don't think specs notice good markings or bad ones much if at all. I think it's mostly a non-starter, more so just magician's guilt as to their possible detection really. If you handle the deck as though it is regular, in most cases it will be taken as such, as specs simply don't fathom too much what they don't see and are not alarmed by, unless it's some kind of bodacious jump-cut as to logic. Most times they will only see the markings if you show it to them, and just why in the world would you ever do that? Much ado...

Note that there were two styles of marked 1800s. One had the marks in the upper left corner and those were kind of small. The second version had them in the spade-like shapes to either side of the middle of the back design and they were significantly larger (but still subtle enough that many people missed them when looking for the marks).

Sounds like the earlier version was worse. I see these as similar to other reader decks in terms of readability. To me, they're just as readable as the standard Penguin marked deck. And, yes, I agree that specs never notice markings, even when they're super obvious, but the design of the 1800s makes them even more hidden for anyone who takes them to the movies, since the design on all the backs is different, making it impossible to see the marks through that tried and true method if you have someone looking for a marked deck. In other words, I like using them on someone who thinks I'm using a marked decek, but even they can't find the marks. |
