Most of the Mentalism revolves around Extraction (reading a thought).
Are there any effects that involves Inception (planting a thought)? |

You must plant before you can extract.

Inception was a possible title for the effect that became my Infamous book test. It could certainly be presented as planting a word.

Also check out Ian Rowland's material. I think he covers bits in his Penguin Live lecture, but he also has a 'Subliminal Prediction' in his lecture notes. Both are very good!

Hi guys,
Yes, there are plenty of effects like these on the market. For example on Freeform Mentalism by Peter Turner are one or two Effects you could do this. I think also on the True Mysteries DVD from Fraser Parker should be one. Regards Prometheus

The theme of my effect Sublimimal Square is the subliminal implantation of a number, drawing on the methods allegedly used in movie theaters to increase comcession stand sales.

How cosmic is this .. I was just thinking of this on my drive to work this morning ... I was working on a routine Implanting a thought .. Just like putting a slip of written paper in a book, it is easier than reading the entire book looking for a single word.

My entire opening sequence of psychological forces is presented as implanting thoughts. I project images into the audience's minds.

I often work prediction effects as inceptions. Of course the prediction in this case is never called a "prediction", because it's proof of what thought(s) I was trying to implant.

C.J. Inner circle There's a lotta rambling in my 2366 Posts |
I saw a performing duo do a small show once where they showed two sets of words (I seem to recall one at a time) for a minute or so. The challenge was to remember as many words as possible. Then the words were hidden, and everyone in the audience had a pen and paper to write down as many words as they could remember. After this, the performers asked how many people had written down the word "Sweet". Almost everyone had it. We were informed that, whilst all the words in the set were related to "sweet", sweet itself was not on the list.
We didn't get to see the original words again, so I don't know if it was true or not, but there's a good example of inception.

As for the OP, I tend to think that with a little creativity, most methods and effects can be presented as either premise (reading or control). The more personal the information or decision is, the less viable the extraction premise will be. For example, inception is entirely implausible as a way of knowing the name of their childhood pet. Extraction makes very little sense when revealing a choice made from a restricted set of options, such as a list of words. There is also a third way, which is sort of an intuitive guessing approach. Such as when you say "you seem like the type of person that would choose orange," for example. In that case, it is neither implanting, nor extracting, information in the true sense. But more of a prediction based on probability and character assessment. |

I do a great routine using timeless by Liam Montier as an influence routine which hits hard. Look up timeless on the Café and the routine is outlined there.
Posted: Jan 15, 2015 09:53 am I actually use the premise of the movie inception for the routine.

What it could really come down to is the framing of the effect and how it is presented. Many effects can be shaped and "reformatted" to fit the goal/theory of inception.

You are right, but I think shakuni want to really implant thoughts, to force something.

In an "interrogative sales process" you attempt to have the buyer introduce an idea as if it is their own,
on the theory that they cannot later argue with what came out of their mouth. The methods for doing this are part of techniques of Persuasion and "Conference & Discussion" that used to be advanced Speech courses. So, I am sure a Mentalist could study and use these techniques to advantage., but time restraints may limit their effectiveness for a audience (could work one-on-one) Subliminal suggestion can work but is risky for a specific idea like a number, but effective for a general concept like hunger, color, pain, etc. Then, you can also just convince the person that what they thought of was implanted there by you. Again, this is a practiced sales technique. Probably all of these are in some Mentalism book -- the point is that they are valid approaches.
