For one of the effects, The Arch of Sunzi, the spectator takes his deck and shuffles it.
He cuts the deck anywhere and places the smaller half in his left pocket.
He deals piles as directed and any leftover he places also in his left pocket.
He deals a different number of piles and any leftover he places face up on the table.
The remaining cards go in his right pocket.
He tells you the names of the leftover face-up cards.
You then tell him the number of cards in each pocket.
I think the effect is better done in person but it will work 100% of the time if the spectator follows the instructions correctly. Hope that helps.
