I've been hired to do a Christmas party event but I've just been told that the theme is 'black magic' don't ask me why.
What sort of effects can be associated with black magic? |

A Christmas party with a "Black Magic" theme ?
Virgin Sacrifice Drinking of Blood Conjure Satan Most of the effects we do are in Bizarre/Storytelling not "Black Magic". I would question that gig ...

Maybe they are Goths or Metal Heads.
What about just changing the theme of a seance to become a Goetic Invocation, but using all the same types of effects. Then at the end tell them the only way to banish the demon is for one of them to willingly offer themselves in sacrifice. That should get you out of the building on time.,, |

Yeah. Red flag. The notion of "black magic" as a christmas party theme seems weird and wrong.
I love the spooky demon conjuring tricks as much as the next guy, but this doesn't sound fun. Run away. Christmas is still a ways out.. plenty of time to get a different gig. Or keep Brynmore's plan as a back up if you decide to go through with it. And maybe leave some head shots behind for your kin to put on milk cartons...... Just in case... All joking aside.. you probably can't go wrong with an evening of DARKSPELL. |

Cheap and easy would be pendulum. Honestly though it should be much easier to use the same effects you normally do and that way you don't have to learn anything new. Just rewrite the story to fit the theme. A new story line and new effects to learn by christmas is tough. much easier to just learn new words
PS - double check what they meant by black magic. I went to the black magic Café and it turned out they just had lotsa different coffee. You don't wanna show up for hoodoo and it be a tea party |

Wow--I thought I was in Spooky; did I stumble into the wrong room? "Black magic" can mean different things to different people. I think it is silly to have a knee-jerk reaction to the term, and people telling you to run away? C'mon! There sure is a lot of judgment going on here. Evocations, poltergeists, PK effects, spirit work, seances? Prof BC, Outlaw, Lebanon Circle?...
No one is expecting blood sacrifices if you have been hired for a professional show, and I would really question a bizarrist who can't put together some routines with darker window dressing to suit a theme like this... Heck, even regular mentalism can scare the heck out of average people if presented a certain way. To me, this sounds like it could be a blast, and possibly a reputation maker! EDIT: listen to ZoOpDoG, above--he's got it right. |

Once again, someone has try to point out it is wrong for others to have an opinion !

As I will be delivering several Christmas sermons, I would - for myself - avoid it. But then, I avoid all black magic.

Gee Seth coming in pretty strong...
I was joking and I think we all are taking the ****, the post is kind of funny. Even Horus mentioned he's joking. Godzilla says drinking blood/virgin sacrifices/conjuring Satan. Brynmore says Goths/metalheads hahaha come on man, who is being serious exactly? Maybe you missed the joke? Black magic - Wikipedia: involving the supposed invocation of evil spirits for evil purposes. A Christmas show hahaha, seriously.... The term does have a sketchy meaning regardless if it's warranted. All we have to go on is he was offered a show, by who for who, would be the next logical question, after the laughing subsides. Hey Dan was it Pepsi/corporation or some dude who requested it, what do they mean Black Magic is the real question how can you answer that if you don't qualify it? Goats invited?

If the gig is real. You could go with "Krampus" Christmas and a demon. Job Done

Look there is no need to take the ****. This is absolutely a real event and I have spoken to the organisors in person. Their understanding of the term black magic is far from the true meaning. People who are not magicians do not necessarily understand what black magic is. They actually just meant dark and mysterious magic. This was not clear to me when I posted the original question. Thanks to those who showed a bit of respect in their answers

But it's your gig, your decision to take it. I myself would simply tell the people arranging the party that I don't prefer to do dark magic at Christmas time. I think you confused solid advice with disrespectful advice. I don't think anyone here was trying to be disrespectful. You may want to consider how out of place the other bizarrists on this thread consider this request before you start lecturing us. |

You unfortunately didn't qualifying what that means to them? It would be ridiculous to have a Black Magic Christmas? Apparently, that did not occur to you before you asked that question Then you say we are being disrespectful after we asked you to go back and qualify, you came back and said the question was not really what you meant. I believe we did help you. A Black Magic Christmas? Ha that's hilarious dude! You fail to see the humor? Really? That's not disrespect by the way, that's comedy at its best, roll with it and join the laugh. Don't feel embarrassed or defensive we all make mistakes. No big deal, it's good to laugh around here for a change there is too many petty arguments lets not make this another one. A Black Magic Christmas, I think I will change my poster and have that as a tag line. Great for a comedy bizarre guy. With much respect, it's comedy gold brother. Thank you for that. I'm glad no one is having a Black Magic Christmas!

Actually, I am going to say go for it. Fight the power, if they want to pay you to do the gig, then go hard...
How about a Krampus Christmas Party? Krampus is some dark, evil stuff. Plenty of dark magic there. You could do fairy tales about Krampus abducting children and them never being seen again, and have a disappearance of a token representing the children. How about Kurotsuke to decide who has been naughty and nice? How about a Krampus Seance? |

Ha are you being serious Brynmore? I think they qualified that it does not mean Black Magic in the "traditional" sense, it was just their terminology as lay folk.
Abducting children at Christmas, what a fun family show Who is attending BTW?
