The day of the Smart Phone Teacher is not far off.

My IPod holds more music than a smart phone, my camera takes better pictures and video than a smart phone, and if I drop my existing phone in the toilet it does not create a financial hardship.
We shall meet in the place where there is no darkness...

It still amazes me to see so many people fooling around with their smart phones, instead of having a conversation with their companions. For example, in a restaurant. You'll see guys and gals on a date, each totally absorbed in their own device. Or say a family of four: mom, dad, and their two kids are all playing with their phones ... scrolling, texting, emailing ... absolutely focused on that small little universe in their hands.
I'm with Doug: what happened to the art of conversation? |

It is written, man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of the Gods. Magic is the bread and butter which must dressed with some plausible fiction for otherwise it dies. The real smart phone must not only contain infomation but must well dressed with fiction. The good teacher, he must make his facts entertaining. Whole brain satisfaction: Such is art. Mr Job, he got the balance about right.

Mind you, as I'm sitting outside Wal-Mart on a Sunday night wondering what time the last bus comes, I wish I had a phone I could check RIPTA's schedule with. [Apparently, my schedule was an old one and showed a ''6;32'' bus which didn't come.] I walked over to McDonald's and I'm using their computer terminal to find out the last bus is in fact 7;02. I have ten minutes

Go back into Wal Mart, get a bike and save the planet. Or is it too cold for bike rides.

But if too many folks did that then we would lay off our bus drivers and grow the Chinese bicycle economy. A smartphone is a win-win for everybody (except possibly the planet). He knows the bus schedule, the bus driver remains employed and the phone is manufactured in China.

Not really proud of it or anything, like you , it's just a matter of what I need. I'll get a smartphone eventually I'm sure, but I'm not in any rush. |

This is another thread which has become a standoff between readers and no one changes their mind. If a smartphone was only a phone, I too would not carry it most of the time. A more fitting analogy would be that it's more like a Swiss army knife. It can do many useful, practical tasks that are both routine and urgent. A look at the list of features available in most current smartphones is impressive to say the least. Also, just like at home, if you don't feel like answering it, don't. Or better yet, you can silence it or put it in different modes to do only what you want it to do.

What standoff? Some need them and say why and others not and say why. Nobody has even attempted to change anyone else's mind.

That puzzled me too, Danny. There's no attempt to convince anyone of anything here, nor was that the intent of my OP.
Not EVERYTHING here is an argument. This is just a discussion. |

If I was smart I probably wouldn't need a smart phone. The truth is, as others have said, the phone is only a small part of what a smart phone can do. Some of the things I use it for are an alarm clock to wake me up, my daily newspapers and magazines, listening to 1 or 2 books per week on Audible.com while commuting and excercising, listening to virtually any music I want with the Spotify app, taking very good pictures with a built in camera and storing them on a photo album. When I travel I always have a built in navigator that tells me the quickest routes and closest gas stations and restaurants. Of course when I get to work I look at my calender and schedule that is always on my phone and ready to make changes if needed. And then there are the little things that are one swipe away when you need them such as a flashlight, timer and calculator. Of course you could carry around a camera, an Ipod, a daily diary etc. but why would you when you can have it all conveniently in one pocket-and we all know the importance of pocket space for magicians LOL.
I agree that Iphones can be abused but if used wisely they can become an invaluable tool in everything you do. If you are going to carry around a phone anyway, and you can afford it, then why not carry around a smart phone. There are many who will hesitate to get their first smart phone but I'll bet once they do they will never go back to an ordinary phone. |

My friends and I constantly use our IPhones to check our sleights/blocking/angles during sessions. I like to set up the camera to use like a mirror for my Zarrows and pull-outs when I'm out and about the coffee shops. It's Job-tastic!
One time, when I was young, I botched a sleight so bad, Vernon, Marlo & Miller rolled over in their graves. But I didn't see Elmsley, probably because he was behind the others.
