Do you guys allow your public shows to be videotaped by the audience. I let my private shows be videoed but was doing a library halloween show yesterday and all the ipads came out and I left thinking maybe I wouldn't allow taping next time because it's a free show for them. Thoughts?

I couldn't care less if they tape me. Perhaps the kids will look at the tape, and say get that guy. It is free advertising.

There is no use in trying to stop it.
You would have to look like a jerk to even try and control it. That is not the impression we want to give. It does bug me that anyone can video my show and include the Kids present but I can't use such video freely. If libraries or parents don't want video it is up to them to stop it. I've been told by Libraries that I can't "tape" but Kids were doing it from the crowd. It is just weird. -Mary Mowder |

I don't remember ever not being videotaped. I love it, don't mind, and I'm usually videotaped at every single show I do.

Actually, once I objected. I was doing a college hypnosis show and one guy got right up onto the stage and began taping the show, running around and sticking a phone in people's faces. I asked him to step back twice (I don't give third warnings) because he was blocking the view of the audience. Then I took the phone off him and threw it to the back of the nightclub. He then left my stage, which was a wise decision on his part.
But in every other situation they are only taping you because they are enjoying the performance. So like Eric, I welcome it.

I am fine with it, so long as they hold their cameras the right way round.

I make a kind announcement if I see a person video recording me. I simply state "I'm sorry, I do not allow video recording of my show. Take as many photos as you wish." If someone continues to do so, they are just an - - -

I say SOMETIMES it's OK. Why am I against filming the entire show? Please read it all to understand why this is a business decision as opposed to an emotional response.
'YES YES.. IF IT'S YOUR KID UP-HERE, GO AHEAD FILM ... BUT IF YOU'RE FILMING THE ENTIRE SHOW I HAVE TO CHARGE YOU." big After calling a helper up - I point at the mom sitting next to the kid and say "By all means YES, It's alright if YOU film. If the parents are sitting in chairs and I call a kid up then I say " Are you here by yourself or is your mom here? OK. SHE CAN FILM THIS...big After you do this for the first 3 routines then you probably don't need to monitor the situation as much. - - - - - In the beginning I do 5 minutes of sleights that should not be filmed - let alone find their way onto the net so if a camera comes out I say "Not yet.. You can film when your brother is up here but right now... IT'S NOT TIME TO FILM - IT'S TIME TO WATCH MAGIC..BIG ----- Then you have the problem of those big tablets getting in the way. "Please... ˇThe people behind you can't see the show which is completely different live as opposed to the film... just wait. I'll tell you when (hand motions for the tablet to go down) - - - - - We post signs at illusion shows and corp shows about not filming. It's not classy and the footage looks terrible because of the lighting Terrible footage make you look terrible - which equals terrible word of mouth. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Why am I against filming the entire show? A Somewhere, sometime, some day, when you least expect it, you'll see it on the net ... and it won't look good - Often, the video of your live performance does not translate to a motion picture very well. B. I've actually had someone call and ask me to do a different show because they were at another party - filmed it - and played it for a month on their TV.... so the kids want a different show. C. Twice, 2 times Not once but twice... schools asked to see the entire show because "they had to make sure the content was appropriate"... on the 2nd or 3rd sales call I was informed that they (PTA or staff) showed the footage to ALL the kids in the school for their after school program or other, and......... yes... they liked it BUT... there was no need for me to come to the school because everyone has seen the show. - - - - I bought a fake cell phone and... if you grab the real one (from adults only) - and switch them while walking back to your area - the fake phone is dropped in a paper bag.... which you hit with a hammer..... it stops others from filming. I swear it's true. AND You reproduce their phone later, making for another "unplanned" trick which always gets a round of apple sauce.... with cinnamon (I just want to see if you're reading all this).

I never have a problem with people video recording my shows. Like Tony said, it's free advertising. I have had a couple of issues with being hired for a company picnic or birthday party being held outdoors in public parks. Sometimes the client will try and get me to police the people trying to watch the "free show". I tell them that since it is a public place, I can't stop anyone watching the show.
