There are many effects which use this technique as you will all be wel laware, but how do you guys get around it when working with a bunch of people who all know eachother?
I'm entertaining a group of friends this weekend (friends of mine) and can't think of away around it unless it's an effect where all seems fair at the end - if that makes sense. My thoughts at the moment are to just avoid tricks that use it, but just wondered if you guys had come up with any solutions. This may have to be a topic for downstairs, in which case I appologise and I'll repost in 40 + posts time! Russell |

I think you should use material and methodology that is best suited to the circumstances. In general, DR is a very fragile and vulnerable technique for the conditions you describe.

Agreed. There are ways it can be achieved, however in the circumstances you describe it should be a lesser part of the effect as a whole, or it may become transparent.
But yes, this should go downstairs. Simon |

Thought people might have thought that - I guess any answers that help me, might be too revealing - I'd appreciate PMS with your thoughts. If the MODS see this as too revealing as it is - please remove

Only way I could think of using a DR with people who know each other would be to include some form of hypnosis. I think Anthony Jacquin has some good dvds available for this type of thing but you would not have time to learn it all and practice before the weekend.

It won't take long to reach 50 posts and despite what some say you will find some helpful folks downstairs.. See you down there and welcome to the Café.

I appreciate that George - thanks.
Troy - I know what you mean, to be honest I'll just avoid the matter this weekend and just do what I know, I was really asking for future reference Russell |

Haha - PMs I guess would have been more accurate. Private Message even better :/ - a Personal Mind Reading Squirrel would be fantastic though...

As they're your friends, why not do a real brutal and smutty pseudo psychometry routine instead?

I guess my question to you is: How do your friends see you with regards to your mentalism? If you approach them as someone who can read minds or has some other mental abilities, will that play properly? If they will be seeing it all as 'just tricks', then maybe you should consider either doing something that will help them get used to your newfound? powers like maybe some palm reading, or else switch it completely to magic and just do some 'tricks'. Otherwise remember that DR is best served to spectators who won't be discussing it afterwards, so you might consider something else, like Iain's pseudo-psychometry. Regardless, I hope you have a great time!

In my experience performing for friends and family is brutal, and that goes double for mentalism. I wish you the best of luck.
Chaz93: Where can I buy this squirrel? I want one. Lol IAIN: "why not do a real brutal and smutty pseudo psychometry routine instead?" That, is, an amazing idea. A pseudo psychometry routine where the participants Don't want to be linked to the item! Imagine doing that for a nightclub audience. For the right crowd that could be a signature effect. Maybe someone has done this? Someone must have. |

Hi,
watch out to who you perform! Even if - or just because - they are your friends. In my beginnings even some closer friends wanted to make me look stupid. I performed one on one and asked if they could help me out cause I wanted to try something new. Though they have not done what I said they should do, like when sth. needs to be written down they haven't or wrote sth. stupid. Or:"think of three different digits", and then:"haha, you are wrong I got the number 333". Please be carefull, trust me. Cheers Prometheus

Yeah I ways find it harder to perform in front of them. Mainly because they know I don't have powers. Still good to practice technicalities on them though.

I think DR really belongs only on the stage.

I think a possible exception to the rule that DR belongs on the stage could be effects where the spectators "exposing" the DR as having happened actually strengthens the effect. Luke Jermay and Brandon Queen both have work on this idea that takes the form of making someone forget something. But generally I agree, DR is for the stage.
