I find it interesting the things that I can remember from years - even decades - ago, and the things I cannot remember from days - or hours - ago.
As an example of the former, I've mentioned in a couple of threads here that my brother will be sending me, amongst other things, my father's trigonometry book, which I regard as one of the best-written mathematics textbooks ever. I haven't seen it on over 40 years, but I can vividly recall excerpts from it. For example: In the opening chapter it discusses methods for measuring the height of a tall tree. It introduces ordinary man (OM) and smart man (SM). OM's approach is to climb the tree with a long rope in tow, reach the top of the tree, then climb down and measure the rope. It lists several disadvantages: 1. The branches of the tree will likely prevent the rope from hanging straight. 2. The top branches are too small to support the weight of a man. 3. Considerable effort is required to climb a tree. At the beginning of the chapter on trigonometric identities, it has these two sentences: If you have a normal, healthy, active mind, you will enjoy proving trigonometric identities. The converse of this statement is not necessarily true. Later in the chapter on trig identities it mentions that the approach is to start with one side of the identity and manipulate it until it looks like the other side of the identity. There's this sentence: Quite naturally, we prefer to simplify the complicated side, rather than to complify the simplicated side. (Can you imagine a trig textbook today containing gems like these?) So . . . what do y'all remember after a bazillion years that you have no business remembering? |

Being able to hum/whistle, note perfect, a full guitar solo, while losing the odd lyric, from some of my favourite songs.
What a wank mix.

I'm with Ray, I remember full guitar solo's and lyrics from songs and tv shows that should be long forgotten.

I love it when a sensory stimulus like a smell or a sound triggers a memory of something I thought I'd forgotten completely. Happens all the time, bringing back memories from when I was as young as three or four years old. The entire scene or event that was originally associated with the stimulus comes back with amazing clarity.

Of course, we're often shockingly wrong about things we are certain we remember. I'm looking forward to S2000 rereading those passages to see how well he remembers them.

The serial number of my military rifle and my Army serial number from a period of time older than the age of most people on the Café. Remembered them within the past year with no reason whatsoever and no stimulus. Of course I've also started to have the strangest dreams of my life for no good reason other than an aging brain.

The second section of the first chapter discussed the measurement of the width of a river (with OM and SM complete). OM's method was to tie a rope to a rock or tree on one side of the river, wade or swim across, then measure the length of the rope. It concluded with this sentence (if memory serve): The student may amuse himself by listing the disadvantages of this method. |

Two years ago September I was in Mafra, Portugal, for the TREC World Championship. Unfortunately, I never got to run the obstacle course, and only walked part of it (thanks to a torn ACL), but to this day I can describe the layout and order of all 16 obstacles in the course.

I recall the nude scenes from movies.
What's funny is that now we can look up these scenes on the Internet, I seem to have misremembered MOST of them, which has definitely changed my opinion about the nature of memory. Also, I have spent years interpreting, lecturing, and discussing the ending words of a movie. When I watched the movie agai a month or two ago, I found out I remembered it wrong. My interpreting, lecturing, and discussing had replaced the thing itself. I wonder how often we do this. |

I remember every phone number I or my family had prior to the cell phone. Now I only remember a couple close relatives cell numbers ( most are " just hit their name in contacts" now) but I still remember all the old landline numbers we had.
Also, other things that I seem to remember the longest are the most trivial things like old song lyrics or TV shows. The more trivial it is, the longer and better I seem to remember it.
