On Dan & Dave Buck's website, there is an essay by Paul Wilson called 'Ten Movies Every Magician Should See'. He compares the feeling he gets from certain movies to the feeling he gets watching certain magic tricks:
"I have similar memories about magic effects I’ve seen or performed — memories I try to revisit or recreate whenever I have the chance. The first time I saw David Copperfield perform the license plate trick; Michael Weber dropping three cards onto the floor; Max Maven removing a card from his pocket or Juan Tamariz revealing thirteen hearts in order or that first time I found a thought of card at a thought of number..." I'm intrigued by this image of Michael Weber dropping three cards onto the floor. Does anyone happen to know what trick Paul might be describing here? |

I'd like to understand the allure of the "Cards to floor" bar tricks. They seem to have an underground popularity, yet I don't see how they play out. Several versions have the spectator "fetching" the cards underfoot/on the floor. ie Mark Mason's "Foot to Mouth" on his Decade DVD
I try to keep a spectator from remembering a card, much less pick it up off the floor multiple times. Just me?
It's not their senses that mislead, it's their assumptions.

I haven’t seen many tricks where cards end up on the floor, but here are a few guesses as to the appeal: it expands the typical space where a card trick occurs; a card underneath your foot would seem to a layman to be beyond manipulation; and...it’s just different. So far, no one has been able to tell us what Michael Weber’s trick was. Did the cards change as they fluttered to the floor? Did they bounce back up to his hands? Did they burst into flames? Inquiring minds want to know!

According to Vernon, after he taught Nate Leipzig "Matching the Cards," Leipzig used to perform it such that the three cards of the same suit that were found by various means were each held parallel to the floor and allowed to flutter down to the floor (or stage). When the supposedly wrong card was cut to or however it was produced, a spectator was asked to pick up the cards that were on the floor; to his amazement he would find that now they all matched the "wrong" card. Now I have no idea what Michael Weber performed, but that would be a good one. The effect is enhanced by the *casualness* with which the cards are allowed to flutter to the floor.

I was along side with Michael Weber at the recent The Session convention this week weekend in London.
Yesterday night I mentioned this effect of his to him. That Paul Wilson had mentioned it as one of the greatest effects he has seen. I was really just looking for Michael to describe the effect for me and telling me a little about it. He then takes out his back of cards. Mumbles a little bit "well, let me see if I still remember this....haven't performed it in years...." He then proceded to fool me BADLY. But not only that....really giving me a sense of magic. Can't remember the last time I had that feeling. A big, big highlight for me at the convention. And just overall for my 20 years in magic |

If I were to describe the effect it would sound dull and don't do the overall experience justice.
Much better.....if you are along Michael Weber at a convention or anything, ask him about the effect and he will probably show you, as he did to me☺ |

Dropping the cards onto the floor is just a presentational touch. What really fooled Paul Wilson was the sudden appearance of the "You owe me $14!" card.

Let's see. Over two years. Some jokes. Some rubbish about making the effect sound dull(?). And we are still no closer to finding out what the effect is. Magicians helping magicians.

Maybe it isn't theirs to tell.
Sure I'm intrigued by the effect, but maybe the experience is superior to the actual trick. Look at half the stuff that was written about Real Secrets, at least half said it wasn't worth it while the others loved it. |
