Visit trickshop.com They have two of his most notable books in pdf for about $5 or $6 each. That place is an oasis for Mentalists and Patrick does a stellar job of revamping tons of old mentalism manuscripts into crisp, modern new pdf's. There's just so much goodness to be found there it's unbelievable. I strongly feel that the work he is doing is a huge asset to the community and important in terms of preservation.

He had a peek in one of his booklets, and he seemed to be really fond of it.
It looked promising, but I felt that I was missing something in my understanding of the instructions. I will need to revisit that some day to see if I can have better luck. |

Interesting how ANYBODY would call a seasoned professional and living legend "weak" when referring to ANYTHING he did? I think it extremely disrespectful to use that kind of verbiage concerning a great performer and creator like Mr. Osterlind. I as well as most here can only dream, to reach the level of entertainment professionalism and skill as Mr. Ostrilind has. Only when one has accomplished what he has, can one critique with any reliability, his work negatively. What one can say is FOR ME the material is questionable or whatever but again to call it "weak" denote real disrespect.
Personally I have found Mr. Osterlind's work EXTREMELY helpful and the man to be one of the nicest persons in our art. Thank you Mr. Osterlind for all you have done for all of us and sharing ANYTHING you chose to with the magic and mentalism community.

A discerning performer is not afraid to voice their opinion based on experience. Of course, this thread is not about Richard Osterlind. It is about Gene Grant's work. ( which inspired my own thinking at a period when little was published. To each his own ) Your rant is misdirected. They were referring to Phantini's material in the context of this time period. They were saying nothing about Richard Osterlind. (Attention to detail can be helpful)

That's your opinion. Mine is different and ATTENTIVE to Mr. Osterlind. I care nothing about opinions from thread posters who have done nothing compared to not only a living legend but one who posts here regularly and is willing to help anyone with his EXPERIENCE. If Mr. Osterlind chose Phantini material for reworking and redistribution, it's because he identified a hole in the community he wants to fill.
Neither the material nor Mr. Osterlinds take on the routines are "weak". Weak are the opinions of those who don't know the man or avail themselves, of his work.

.... But
Doing videos / lectures - those are 'gigs' RO does, and is part of his living It's not that he found a 'hole in the community' - it's that he found a vehicle for another DVD I’m only 2+ hours in [another 50 mins to go], so with that caveat… I can see what people mean by ‘weak’ – it’s because these methods have either been improved on [adapted] or brand new ways to achieve the effects have come around since - that are BETTER The blurb for this project, “Mentalism secrets unknown by even top pros” I doubt that, as the routines so far all feel like I’ve seen them many times before – and the methods aren’t new – but some are rather shaky. It could be that RO added extras are all the bits that seem a bit seen before. As I have watched so many of his videos. “His material was ahead of its time and as devious as it was bullet-proof” Many of the routines on here are not ‘bullet proof’ – as RO gives you multiple ways to deal when ppl don’t go with what you need them to do. I don’t think saying, ‘send that spec back and get another one’ – if it doesn’t go to plan – means its bullet proof. I also think RO is a little ‘off’ on this project. Both in the live performances, and in the explanations. Live shows: It could be he didn’t get to do these effects before in front of an audience. He misses out parts of the effect he was meant to do [forgot to do the card F- in one]. He forgets names. There are weird camera cuts [what happened that was cut out?]. Explanation: maybe he’s never done them before the live shows. It’s usually great to hear him talk about what happened. Like when someone was hard work – or it went a bit wrong/unexpected. Doing the chat first – you lose that. And he loses his way in some of the explanations. It may well be age – as many of the other RO videos I’ve watched he was much younger and also had someone to help him with the explanation part of the videos. I would definitely say the material [for nowadays] could seem weak. I would also definitely say that RO is not as great as he normally is. I would end in saying – I think RO is amazing. I have and have watched so many of his videos. I truly think he is brilliant. And when speaking to young mentalists I always bring him up as being excellent and that I love his style. I am a fan boy. But because his stuff has been so good – then by comparison this project doesn’t fair that well. But compare it to other less talented, or interesting, or believable performers – and this is probably still a very good project. |

I would agree - this material has been improved upon. I was already familiar with the Phantini material but picked this up anyways just to see it in action and to watch Richard. And on those grounds, it was what I expected and I enjoyed watching it.

I am not a fan of this dvd, neither the work, performances or the tedious explanations.
