The Charles Dickens Christmas classic comes to Doppelganger. The most popular ghost story of all time now finds its way to the Doppelganger library. Dickens was a great fan of ghost stories and wrote several himself ('The Signalman'; 'The Haunted Man' and others) but in A Christmas Carol he managed to create in Jacob Marley 'perhaps the greatest haunting force in English literature' and followed him up with not one or two but three more ghosts, who come to startle, terrorize and ultimately reclaim Ebenezer Scrooge. Currently taking preorders unti lthe official release this Friday. To retain your Authenticity Code please leave a note on checkout, failing that if you've already purchased a previous edition we will match you up to your last purchase. Images will be added later this week. http://www.lebanoncircle.co.uk/collectio......as-carol |

As for where you enter your COA #, I didn't spot it at first but Winks set me straight.

That's one great looking book and the hand-coloured etchings and four woodcuts by John Leech look amazing. What color are the title and end pages on this one? Green and red or blue/red and yellow?

Actually, the "hand-coloured green endpapers to match the green of the title page" referred to in the article link was only for the first 500 copies. Dickens did not like the patterned green colour and opted for yellow endpapers, requiring the printer to reprint the title page in different colours to match the yellow (because it clashed with the yellow). Dickens also decided to plump for gilt-edged pages to help sales (or so he thought). These changes (along with other issues) drove the cost up until Dickens profited very little from the sale of his now-classic Christmas story (despite the fact that it sold out in five days and went into a second printing immediately).
You will be receiving a facsimile of the very rare 1st state of the first edition: patterned green endpapers, original colour of the title and end pages that matches the green, no gilding, and the 'Christmas red' cover rather than the tawny cover used in the second state because it had to match the yellow endpapers. Because this book was considered 'immediately collectable' in 1843, nearly all 500 of the first state books survive today, so it is not impossible that you should acquire one. They may be terribly expensive in the antiquarian book world (second state books often fetch in excess of $40,000 and first state volumes can be as much as $100,000), you could have always acquired one by legacy or gift. Prof BC, I saw that they are being shipped from the USA on the 15th. Do you have delivery times for Europe? Anything I have ordered from the States previously has taken up to 4 weeks to get here (which doesn't leave much of the Christmas season left).

Shipments to Canada can take longer than to Costa Rica (I don't know why--a strong enchantment spell at the border, I suspect), and I have known shipments to Germany to arrive at customs fairly quickly (11-14 days) and then be held up in customs with no reason given for several weeks. Shipping from the US is necessitated by the logistics of matching requested Certificate of Authenticity numbers to buyers. I also need the extra time to finish aging all the books (a long process). It is simply faster if I do all of it here and put it into the post directly to the buyer rather than ship it to Dan, which would mean an 8-day wait before he could unpack them, repack them individually, and ship them on from there. If only I had a reindeer. BC

Charles Dickens was member of the Ghost Club. A good start for a lot of stories.
Quote:
The club has its roots in Cambridge when in 1855 fellows at Trinity College began to discuss ghosts and psychic phenomena. Formally launched in London in 1862 (attracting some lighthearted ridicule in The Times), it counted amongst its early members Charles Dickens and Cambridge academics and clergymen.[2] One of the club's earliest investigations, in 1862, was of the Davenport Brothers' "spirit cabinet". The Ghost Club was challenging the brothers' claim to be contacting the dead - a claim that was later proved to be a hoax. The results of that investigation, though, were never made public. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ghost_Club |

Why, oh why, OH WHY did I not find these books sooner?!
I've been walking in the muggle wilderness for the past 18-odd years, but I've decided to return & switch to the dark side of majick I've ordered the 2 most recent editions of Dopps & am now on the lookout for any second-hand copies of the others. Do they come available occasionally? |
