Why try to pin it down?
Altered state? According to that definition of altered state we wall around in one all day.

An altered state is any state outwith the everyday beta waking state. So to a degree we do experience altered states on a daily basis. But not all day. The situation described above was an altered state induced by hypnosis.
Basic definition of trance is just inward focus of senses. To the point of not being aware of external surroundings.( which again we experience on a daily basis) Hypnotic trance is an inward focus of senses guided by a hypnotist or similar process and compounded with suggestion. These are basics found in dictionaries. They are descriptions of what are natural occurrences. |

I think the point Kreskin tries to make is that he doesn't put anyone into a "trance" since he doesn't use the traditional relaxation technique (e.g. close your eyes, imagine you're relaxing on a beach, as I count backwards from 10 to 1, and so on). He bypasses the "induction process" by using his prestige. His reputation proceeds him. Most of the people who volunteer want to be "hypnotized" by him. They are already in a state of high expectation before they even go up on stage. Therefore, they are extremely open and willing to accept suggestive beliefs.

Kreskin uses an induction and he "induces" trance. An induction is a series of steps that brings about something or initiates something. If it induces hypnosis its a hypnotic induction. A trance is just a mental state of being absorbed usually inwardly and using the senses to imagine something to the pint here you become unaware of external environment and experience involuntary movement such as knees giving way. Here are some definitions that took me less than five mins to find.
Induction noun 1. the act of inducing, bringing about, or causing: induction of the hypnotic state. 2. the act of inducting; introduction; initiation. 3. formal installation in an office, benefice, or the like. Boiled down an induction is anything brings about or causes something… Trance 1. a half-conscious state, seemingly between sleeping and waking, in which ability to function voluntarily may be suspended. 2. a dazed or bewildered condition. 3. a state of complete mental absorption or deep musing. trance 1. an unconscious, cataleptic, or hypnotic condition. a hypnotic state resembling sleep 2. any mental state in which a person is unaware or apparently unaware of the environment, characterized by loss of voluntary movement, rigidity, and lack of sensitivity to external stimuli 3. a dazed or stunned state 4. a state of ecstasy or mystic absorption so intense as to cause a temporary loss of consciousness at the earthly level 5. (spiritualism) a state in which a medium, having temporarily lost consciousness, can supposedly be controlled by an intelligence from without as a means of communication with the dead 6. a type of electronic dance music with repetitive rhythms, aiming at a hypnotic effect Altered state From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia An altered state of consciousness (ASC),[1] also called altered state of mind or mind alteration, is any condition which is significantly different from a normal waking beta wave state. The expression was used as early as 1966 by Arnold M. Ludwig[2] and brought into common usage from 1969 by Charles Tart.[3][4] It describes induced changes in one's mental state, almost always temporary. A synonymous phrase is "altered state of awareness The term "altered state of consciousness" was introduced and defined by Ludwig in 1966.[5] An altered state of consciousness is any mental state induced by physiological, psychological, or pharmacological maneuvers or agents, which deviates from the normal waking state of consciousness.[5] Some observable abnormal and sluggish behaviors meet the criteria for altered state of consciousness.[6] Altered states of consciousness can also be associated with artistic creativity[7] or different focus levels. They also can be shared interpersonally and studied as a subject of sociological research.[ |

Slim talked about the loss of memory of his wife after participating in Kreskin's show. It made me think of Franz Anton Mesmer. An 18-year-old girl by the name of Maria Theresa Paradis, who was blind since the age of three, had her sight restored by Mesmer (mesmerism). This attracted the antagonism of the physicians since they were unable to help her. A campaign was mounted against Mesmer and the girl was removed from Mesmer's care against her will. She quickly relapsed into her previous blind state.
Lose of memory and lose of sight. Perhaps there is some food for thought here. |

In world war 1 it was common for soldiers to go blind in the trenches for no reason. Only to have their site returned later in hospital once the threat was over. the Unconscious has control over just about everything. Hypnosis really is the process of working with the unconscious. The same or similar patterns of process can be seen in everyday behaviour. that's when you begin to workout how to use hypnosis in ways that can be applied to subjects and situations that not many know about.

Mindpunisher,
Yes, our conscious awareness, as testified to by the five physical senses, is extremely limited and often deceptive. I would have to say beliefs are beliefs, they are not facts when viewed from a higher system of reference. However, beliefs certainly have their effects. Everything works within its own domain. Even though we may see phenomenal demonstrations, it doesn't necessarily mean it has anything to do with reality. By reality, I mean that which is imperceptible to physical sense testimony and does not require physical sense testimony for its proof. Obviously, this is a deep subject. |

As he was disc jockeying, his friend kept coming up to him with a bottle of beer to drink. Eventually, this guy told his friend not to buy him any more beer because he was becoming too intoxicated and didn't want to drink anymore. His friend looked at him and said, "Mark, how could you possibly be getting intoxicated? I was buying you non-alcoholic beer." |

Back to Slim's question, - does anyone know if the amnesia was intentionally induced by Kreskin? I may have missed it, although I did reread the comments. Just curious.

Is your wife upset about not knowing what she did on stage or is she simply mildly curious? |

I'm kind of wondering the same thing. I did go and read all the comments from 2012 but I'm still in the dark as far as getting to the core of Slim's question. I plead ignorance |
