I'm sure those of you who own Doppelganger are already on this like stink on poop, but I think it deserves sharing beyond the happy crowd of Dopps. Lebanon Circle has just released ENOCH - an audio expansion for Prof BC's now legendary book test series. I posted down in the crypt that I felt the recording had applications beyond performance with Dopps and a couple of people have asked me to expand - so here I am, expanding. Before I start, please let me state that I don't claim to be a seasoned or experienced seance performer, and that these are merely my thoughts that you can ignore as you see fit. Right. So what is Enoch exactly? It's two 30-minute audios, sent as MP3 files. They're not unlike a one-man radio play. But they are convincingly disguised as "found recordings". The buyer should transfer them to audio cassette. The cassette was part of a curious collection of an American preacher's belongings that the performer acquired somehow. The cassettes document the pastor's sermon practice. And they also form a sort of audio letter to his brother. So he speaks his thoughts, he preaches his heart out. It all begins innocently enough. And then events start to happen. Events with an unnerving edge to them. The sense of unease grows gradually. Until, by the end of side two of the tape, there is an uncontrollable crescendo into horror. In many ways, the pacing and structure is a lot like a classic ghost story. Now, owners of the books will know how powerfully this works alongside Doppelganger. But it is my opinion that you don't need Dopps to join this particular party. The pastor does mention books on the tape, so it makes sense that some books are included in the box of belongings you display. But they don't (in my opinion) need to be central to the story you weave. I think the tape, along with a few carefully-selected period religious artefacts, could form a rich and atmospheric set-up for a seance (using ouija, glass moving or any other gaffed/ungaffed methods) even without Prof BC's beauteous books. The recording and processing of the audio has been carried out by an experienced professional. The details in the audio - whirring/humming tape recorder noise, the transitions, the different senses of space, the turning of pages and scratching of pens - are all masterfully done. And the performance is incredible. A professional actor captures the preacher-style tone changes perfectly. And on side two there is a tangible crescendo of from calm to unease to panic as the pastor's world begins to crumble rapidly around him. The recordings could easily stand alone as a radio play. That is how good they are. You could play this with a bunch of books on the table and not perform a single effect - and people would still be moved. So yeah. I just wanted to share my thoughts. I know it's a 'Dopps Brand' release - but I think it's capable of much more. If you simply whip out a Ouija board, turn down the lights and get people to put their fingers on a planchette, of course suggestion and ideomotor can (managed deftly) bring about results. But what is the theatrical "hook"? What is the "plot"? I suppose you could be in a haunted location and that becomes the focus. Or you could spin a yarn about a murder or an asylum. But if you unpacked a box of things - evocative, aged, religious things - then played this powerful tape, and THEN started a glass-moving seance - well then imagine the power of even a slight movement of that glass. Imagine the head-start you would have in terms of building suggestion. What do you guys think? Those that have heard it? Am I getting carried away? Or is there something there?

Spot on.
ENOCH would work excellently well with nothing but a candle and a spirit bell with properly minded guests around a table. A full evening's haunted entertainment right there. Absolutely. BC

Thanks for the link. I'm thinking of purchasing this and using other items (I don't have any Dopps. I'm staying away from book test, memory too lazy at my age).
But one question. What is the time length on each recording? I thinking of putting this on a micro-tape instead of a full size cassette. There is nothing about the time of the segments on the website. |

Yes you certainly can. Perkins has created a real worker with ENOCH.
The tape is 30 minutes on each side/60 minutes total with the side B being the real deal. Side A is the convincer. BTW, Dopps is the first 'no memory work' book test. With a minimum of any three of the titles, the performer can achieve 'the full Doppelganger effect' (including the use of ENOCH or one of the other two recorded presentations), the books do all of the work for you whilst you focus on weaving the tale you wish to tell. That's rather the whole point of Doppelganger, just to clarify. Best, Prof BC

Al, I'm sure with your creative talents you can make this work with something else & create your own that was around a religious based seance theatre piece, if you do that type of performance piece.....
Great idea thoughts from Matcult from 1st post; "I just wanted to share my thoughts. I know it's a 'Dopps Brand' release - but I think it's capable of much more. I sold off a lot of my various bizarre props because I wanted to condense things into a single box (grated a Hobbs Judgement box, but a single box no less). So if a micro-cassette recorder would work for the audio, that would enable me to include it in my box. Prof. - ok, so my second excuse is I don't have the funds anymore for items like Dopp. And when I was working with items like Lillian's or Luna, I found that spectators (at least the few times I use it them a show), spectators just don't like to do the bulk of the work. Items I used where I told the story verbally, where I made things go bump in the night, that was fine. If they had to start thumbing through a book, remembering things, flipping to another page etc. They lost interest. Maybe I'm a better story teller than some of those props. I think I'll order this, it's within my budget right now. |

Okay, Al, we'll drop the Dopps talk, but the spec doesn't flip pages around and memorize with it, either. 'nuff said.
Have you considered for ENOCH perhaps using a digital recorder? You can always claim that you grew worried that the old cassette would break and transferred it to a small, handheld device. This could also allow you to record the Side A on one track and the Side B on another track for ease of access. That would also keep space requirements to a minimum. Best, BC

Funny you mentioned the transfer to a digital recorder due to "worry of tape damage & losing the recording" is exactly what I went with !
Makes it also easier to jump around if needed. I didn't feel l Iike dealing with finding an old style recorder & tapes.... |

I don't know if it's better form to sit this thread out, but I'm just so excited to hear that this has become an intriguing option for performers. I can't help it.
I wanted to say thanks for all the interest and enthusiasm around ENOCH. I've gotten some fantastic reports from people that I very much admire here in the spooky community. It does me dark heart good. I've been deeply inspired by the theatrical possibilities of bizarre magic and I was compelled to add an artifact to the library. ENOCH represents 9 months of research, performance, and audio engineering. It was fostered under the Doppelgänger wing, but in it's development it has become the found recording that I'd hoped it would. It's a wonderful surprise to hear that the outcome has been recognized as something of a utility ghost story caught on tape. I'll tell you this: The first time I did a test run of it with friends and family -- these are people who know me and recognize the voice on the tape -- I just played the recording. They were unnerved and frightened by it. Later when I tried it, Dopps in hand, they were devastated by it. It was… encouraging. I think these characters would serve you well in a variety of performances. I consider this a sort of subversive, collaborative theater. If I can answer any questions or be of any help, feel free to drop me a line. Perkins

Ok. I have listened to both recordings.
First my hat off to Perkins. After spending 45 years in live regional theatre, and as a published and produced playwright, I know when I hear a wonderful script and amazing acting chops. More than well done Perkins. And I have belong to more churches, cults and sects then most people and I know the sound of authentic preaching. This hits the nail right on the head. Yes this audio is a perfect setup for introducing the Dopps books, but in my estimation, it can be used to introduce almost any book test prop. And if you are creative, you can find the proper places to extract sections of dialog that can be used to build up to any "spirit" styled prop. Do not pass this up just because you don't have a set of Dopps. I am waiting for a certain prop from Outlaw and after I get it I am going to work up the time slices that you can use as a build up to MANY effects. I intend to develop a generic enough script that will work with the audio selections I choose and numerous props. I will post that script here at some point. Do not pass this up. If you are a showman, prone to weaving stories and pulling your audience in to take them on an adventure with you, I've heard nothing better to use to set them up. |

Bought the ENOCH as soon as I bought ol' Christmas Carol...
Perkins, you ROCK! I love it soooooo much! This inspires me to go back to that project of mine I was inspired to do after watching the movie SESSION 9 - I love old tapes - and the nice thing (or sadly do to my age now) they are considered relics.... but I have so many bizarrist tape recorders (ones that can put in EVPs, messages, or do the predictions etc) - I am born all over again! Much appreciation, sir!

As far as "trasferring to digital" it's enough to hold up an old cassette tape during performance (even pass it around) and say this is where the recording came from that you transfered to preserve quality.

Wow I'm so glad I found this performance piece. I would imagine there are not too many, if any recording like this available? Congratulations Perkins, I just might have to look into this.
This might be a silly question but it sounds like it's an hour long? Do you break it up into 2 half hour sessions? If so how and in what context? How are audiences reacting to listing to a tape recording for that long? Can it be split up? Meaning can you use only part of it? If so in what way? I'm just concerned about the length but would like to consider it. Sorry for all the questions. |

Many thanks, gang. And fine ideas about transferring the cassette to digital. That would make perfect sense, and yet you could still pass around this tangible link to the story with an old tape.
A good question, Astaroth. Here's my attempt to answer: In it's original Dopps incarnation ENOCH is scripted to play out in about 45 mins to an hour. Sort of like a 1 Act Play. It involves several live, interactive moments that are lead by the performer and a couple of "active listening" sessions. The major narrative is on Side Two. It's 25 minutes long and was originally scripted to play in two sections. Side One is 'the convincer'. It only needs to be played for a minute or two, but there is 30 minutes of material there. It's being suggested that there are more ways to 'play the tape' and interact with it. I've been thinking about this as well now. There are some interesting possibilities. When you come up with one, PM me. I'd love to read it.
