Longtime friend, colleague, and wizard, Tobias Beckwith’s book “The Wizard’s Way” has gone to press. I’ve had the privilege of following his journey from concept to fruition.
If you’d like to “become a wizard” transforming your personal or professional life, check out his Kickstarter project that will allow you to snag and autographed copy hot off the press. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/157......ards-way |

Real wizards? Secret knowledge? What a bunch of nonsense. No wonder it is no where near being funded. This is MAGIC. ILLUSION. Sleight of hand. Secret knowledge. Yeah, let me know how this works. I can well understand how a few guys in another thread were decrying that Spooky forum had become nothing more than a market place for the hawking of less than worthless junk.

Your post strikes me as hostile and inflammatory. You are entitled to your opinion, but you could choose to communicate it in a way that doesn't belittle someone elses creative efforts. |

If I came on here and started preaching, I would expect you to rubbish it HERE. This is not the place. Creative effort??? Go look at the nonsense. You bet I'm hostile. This is not the place for that. This is about magic in its various forms - in our case, occult or dark or bizarre magic. It is not about some secret knowledge that someone claims to be real. And trys to get someone to BUY. See, that's the difference. You want to present a creative idea, fine. You want to try and get people to buy it, that is different. So, yeah, I'm hostile to that. Go peddle that silliness to someone else somewhere else. What we do is NOT real. It is ILLUSION.

One last comment - rather, a question. How tolerant was Houdini of fake mediums who used magic and claimed to be real?

Winks, I think you may find that some in our community have beliefs that are out of step with your own. And that is absolutely fine.
A couple of times now you have made hostile replies to posts about doing things "for real" (I'm thinking of the KOTAH thread here - and he certainly wasn't trying to sell anything, so I don't think your issue is solely with the commercial aspects). I know several bizarre practitioners who are open to the ideas of Western Mysticism or who carry out Energy Work and other "ungaffed"/"real" practices. They are free to do so. They are also free to share their thoughts on these approaches here on this board. Bizarre magic is a VERY broad church and long may it remain so. Each of us inhabits and constructs his/her own framework of beliefs. As a community, we should respect the frameworks of those around us. I'm not sure Houdini's intolerance of fake mediums has any meaning here. Surely nobody would argue that all magicians should all base their lives on his? Or that his way is the only way? For what it's worth, I've not really read the Kickstarter page terribly thoroughly. I'm not a backer and the book doesn't really capture my imagination. But that doesn't mean we should react to it with venom. To me, it doesn't sound any more harmful than thousands of other self-help guide books out there. I don't even think, having skim-read the description, that the author is making any claims to be able to perform "magick" - he has simply appropriated the word "wizard" to describe those who lead powerful, high-impact lives.

"They become real world changers. Those, as Steve Jobs would have put it, who can "make a dent in the universe."
Sounds like Houdini, using his magic to change the world, or at least part there of, to embrace a more sceptical world view. A movie can create a real change in a person viewing it, yet it is an illusion. Our magic is bizarre magic, not because of the occult themes, but because it seeks to create a real emotional response using illusion, sleight of hand and magical methodologies. Studying shamanic and occult traditions showed me examples of the use of psychodrama and in some cases outright trickery to create a change in psychological or physiological state in those who practice those traditions. The shaman would be considered a genuine wizard by their followers. It seems to me that this is what Tobias is trying to achieve, which is very much in keeping with what the founding figures of bizarre magic were trying to achieve, to put the magick back into magic. |

Agreed Minty and Michael, thanks for your support
Angry, challenging behavior just isn't necessary to make a point. I listened to the video elevator pitch and read the type. I'm still not even sure "exactly" what it is? I don't have enough information to evaluate the offering, let alone dismiss it.

Why is a scholar of the Bible so angry?
I experienced first hand, Wink's sharp tongue and willingness to state that I did not know what I was taking about in my own thread. He on the other hand placed his own spin on things, implying I had said things which clearly were not in the text of my comments. I felt like a Cathar experiencing the wrath of actions Innocent IV had set in motion. Winks seems not to understand the realities of Spooky. He has the right to come here and to express his opinion, as do I. Thank God I can still recognize bigoted tripe when I see it. Kotah |

Geez guys! Simmer down.
This book is NOT what you are claiming it is. It’s like people protesting a movie they’ve not seen but merely heard was “offensive.” Tobias has been a successful business man, Broadway producer, manager of top magicians, performer, director, and all around great caring guy. He is NOT a fly-by-night guru trying to shove his ideas down your throats. So relax! This book is a practical guide. Edison was called a Wizard because of his world changing inventions. Bill Gates because of his. Gandhi because of his contributions to humanity. This is a modern-day-wizard. Not some guy in a black cloak casting black magic spells. This book falls into several categories... --It is a BUSINESS book for corporate leaders, teams, training. It is NOT about becoming Merlin. It is a systematic approach to changing how you approach business and thus can develop your own path to reputation, truly serving your customers, and yes, making a profit. --It is a “magicians” book. It provides concrete examples of how extremely successful magical entertainers, from the past and present, are bringing depth, art, and imagination to their performances to enhance their entertainment value, bring some dramatic substance to their audiences, and yes, makig a profit. --It is about owning the inner magic you have (creativity, imagination, craft) the things that made you want to do magic in the first place, the reasons you want to reach out and make people feel good through entertainment. --It is about adopting an attitude that helps you maneuver your way through life with more interest, more pleasure, and perpetuation everything good in your life. It is NOT about “religion” a “spiritual path” leading to enlightenment, or mystic “new-age” woo-woo. --The book is NOT about believing in sprits, an otherworld of the dead, fairest, or unicorns. It is NOT about the fakes that Houdini exposed with talking horns and ectoplasm. It is about brining your personal truth (whatever that may look like) into your profession and personal life. It’s bad form to bash and berate a work you’ve not read, or even read a review about. I hope someone here will ease up and open up. Have you read Robert Neale, Eugene Burger, or Tommy Wonders words on Magic-- do you find that offensive too? You might even enjoy and profit from this book. Nasty comments about ME welcome here, but don’t attach something through your own mirror of misinformation. Walt |
