(And never mind the debate about whether or not Shakespeare wrote his own works.) It is interesting to note that Jay Sankey has said that he doesn't research much magic because he wants to be free to create without subconscious influence. Then there are those who research exhaustively to assure that they are not reinventing methods or effects that already exist. I tend to think the latter is the safer approach, since independent discovery is so common, but there are benefits and drawbacks to both approaches. That topic could make for an interesting discussion on its own. As far as the original question is concerned, shouldn't we at least give credit for inspiration where possible/practical? Or contact the originator regarding thoughts for improvements? As was alluded to earlier, how would we feel if the tables were turned? |

Of course-- how seldom that happens! Who invented the ITR, the 10 ft pole, the flipper coin, and D'Lite? That seems unimportant to most . . . |

Randy, I read and enjoyed your post regarding the origin of the "flipper" coin. As I read it, I thought of my comment here. Your example is one that fits well in this thread's discussion.
(I refrained from commenting over there because three of my fellow Idahoans had already posted all in a row and I didn't want to overload the board ) |

When magic devolves, you get bad magicians nothing more (which consequently has absolutely no bearing on their performance ability as clowns.) The two different interests are apples and oranges in relevance. IMHO Of all of the performers in the world, the clown has the toughest shoes to fill. Just my 2 cents. :clownonball:

Good grief, yes! But then, public executions would be an improvement for some magi I've seen, too. |

Here's a question -
I just read the - In the latest PENUMBRA John Carney has an effect - Can I make the coin described? For myself - Not for sale - He gives detailed instructions on it's manufacture - Then has a disclaimer at the end of the article reserving manufacturing and marketing rights - Now Mr. Carney is one of my HEROS OF MAGIC - I'd never do anything to except support his endeavors - But this is the kind of thing I like to do - Fool around in the machine shop Would I be a jerk to do this? Here's a question related to Dave's. Supreme Magic is out of business. Who has the rights to all of their effects? I've seen manufacturers releasing Supreme's effects, but I don't know if they bought the rights or just took up the task. I've tried to track down some Supreme effects that were published years ago, but the manufacturing rights have been reserved. What does that mean now that Supreme is gone?

Boy: Do not try and bend the spoon. That's impossible. Instead only try to realize the truth.
Neo: What truth? Boy: There is no spoon. Neo: There is no spoon? Boy: Then you'll see that it is not the spoon that bends, it is only yourself. |
