Work related, I'd ask, after working with a person/group of people, what feeling do you want to leave them feeling after you leave? What do you want them thinking/talking about?

Personally, I'd probably talk about music with you...

Or how you've been, all this time.

When I first started performing, I didn't really give it much thought. As I started to mature and develop, I quickly began to realise that it wasn't about me, it was about the guests, especially at corporate and wedding events where I was mingling. It was a steep learning curve tbh.

Now I try to focus on the emotion of disbelief to begin with, many people don't believe I will be correct in reading their thoughts right up until the moment of reveal. the initial response from the participant who is directly involved is shock and silence. the audience surrounding them react vocally and very strong, it take a good few moments before people start to talk to you or ask questions, but at that point you have created two different camps:

1: Those in shock are awe...they want to see more and encourage others to get involved
2. those who have now had their interest piqued, but believe it wouldn't work with them. these people watch from a distance and don't react that much other than maybe a smirk or a smile and then go back to their conversation. keep a look out for these people, they tend to follow you around more than others but don't want to be seen as overly interested.

The balance between 1's & 2's begins to change over the course of the time I am at the event, by the end the majority are in the 1 camp.

There are 5 stages I try to achieve, which can be seen below:

Desbelief________Shock_________Amazement________Acceptence________Recommend

If you can leave the event with the majority of people talking about you and recommending you to others then you have done a good job!

What are the strategies that a mentalist can employ to keep an audience hooked as he progresses from one effect to another during his routine? Each effect individually might consist of (1) you think of something, (2) I'll reveal what it is, (3) people will applaud, and (4) I'll do it again. Being that the basic format is predictable, what does the mentalist do to inject spontaneity and unpredictability into the proceedings?

To avoid dead time?

Be sociable, genuinely take an interest in the people you perform for, they are guests and each one has a story to tell. If you take an interest in them, your performances will hold more interest. Once you allow the guests to be themselves (and not just faces) you will quickly find that the spontaneity and humour becomes common place and everyone has a good time.

To be honest I wouldn't ask you anything that had to do with what we do. I'd ask what other interests do you have outside of mentalism. BS'n over a couple of brews would be cool. Eventually something to do with mentalism would come up and the conversation would go wherever it went from there.

That's my honest answer.

I love anything creative, Art, Photography, Graphic Design, Comics, Graffiti, Music

Weird question, but what was the process like getting the cartoon drawing from Penguin done? Like, do they just do it and say, "hope you like it," or do you have some input?

Looch, the question I would ask in such a situation would be:

Could you tell me a bit about the process from the start to the finish for a new routine? When you know what an effect should look like and you know how you can accomplish that, what are the main steps you take from that point to your first performance for lay people (even clients?)?

Besides that, I would chat with you about comics! (btw: Batman or Spiderman?)

nice day!

Zero input, you send a pic and the first time you see the character is when its live on their site Smile

I often sketch ideas out that I want to try and capture. I tend to work backwards, starting with the effect and work back for the method. I visualise it over and over again, often for months until I go live for the first run. Then its a case of evaluating and modifying until its fine tuned and I'm happy with it.

As a beginner/amateur who doesn't want to be on stage but just want to have a great time performing in front of family and friends I have gotten some great advice but... sometimes the best advice tends to bite eachother, such as:

- Go out and perform as many times as you can, only that way you will learn VS practice, practice, practice before you go out and perform.
- Read and have a look at everything you can to widen your horizon VS stick to a effect you like and only go in deep on that effect.

There is only so much time in one day...

What kind of advice would you give on spending my time on mentalism?

If we were sitting having a drink...I'd wish I knew Michael Murray's drink effect he demonstrated on his Full Circle magic interview.
