Hey everyone, shortly I will start working as a table hopping magician for the first time, so I want to ask a few things: how much time do you think it would be good to dedicate at each table?would you recommend using the same "set" of effects for each table or it's better to have more of them? if so, how many?
If you have any other suggestion, it would be a great help Thank you |

Depending on the size of the venue, I always have four or five sets of three effects making up each set.

A search or two will get some great answers on this subject that the original posters may not wish to repeat.

Make every trick a potential closer.
I personally don't do the sets of three thing. I found it too limiting for me personally- too much to think about. I just carry about 6-8 ish things with me and freestyle it. I like to open with chop cup since they just get to sit back and watch. Be warm and welcoming. Get them to like you and welcome them, thank them for choosing your restaurant. Time at each table will vary depending upon lots of variables, be flexible and pay attention to what's going on with ordering, serving, spectator reactions, etc. You'll get the feel of it. Some tables you'll stay for 10-15 minutes. Some you may do one trick. Some may say no thanks and you'll smile, say thank you and have a nice evening, and move on. I never had any problem performing the exact same effects for tables right next to each other. People just don't pay that much attention- as much as we might hate to admit it. Have fun! Have some business cards! I'm currently getting gigs from cards I handed out months ago.

The same effect will get totally different reactions at each table so when introducing myself I use their reactions to help me work out what effects might be best for them.
Are they quiet/loud; polite/drunk; attentive or easily distracted by phones; young/old; singles/couples; male/female/mixed ? This helps me decide the best opener and the best style of magic to present. Their reactions during the first effect will give me a clue as to when to close, and when to keep performing more effects. Sometimes I go for a longish effect with a bit of a story and some comedy other times I go for fast, snappy effects. The size of the venue and number of tables may also dictate how long you can realistically spend at each table. |
