I second thehawk that!
....and even though the watch routine and PCT is out of this world, there are heaps of more in the DVDs. The BCS is something I use almost every day. It's not fair to mention some effects before the others, they are all gems. However, in addition to the watch routine, PCT routines and the BCS, I have done many of them. The Change of Mind and Radio Sum Total are brilliant, though. So is the Q&A and Magazine Test. Reactions??? HUGE! If you look for magic, both Sweeter & Lower, the bill in cigarette, torned and restored newspaper and the glass of water production are something you absoulutely should look in to. Sven

I stand in the line behind thehawk, and Sven, and second them as well.
The material on these four dvd's are awesome. I love Richards Radar Deck (I have made my own), the PCT is outstanding, so is Cell Phone Efecct, S.O.S PPB blowed me away (I bought one), but to me the best thing is his BCS, it outdone any other system I know. It fits me perfect, its simple as soon you understand the mechanics behind it. So to me volume 2 is the best of them all. I even got the new manuscript about BSC. It's a must if you are into mentalism. Peo

Hello:
I'm kind of a newbie when it comes to mentalism - I've really had no interest in it until recently. But, these DVDs are getting such good reviews, I think I may be missing out. Can someone tell me: Are Richard's routine appropriate in the context of a magic show? I'm not looking to chill people with demonstrations of my powers, etc., but am looking for a strong routine or two to use in my show. Currently, I use a Jumbo McCombical Deck and Giant B'wave in my adult show, so this may give you an idea of the type of material I'm looking for. Thanks. Ron |

Nate: To answer your original question, the reactions I'm seeing most often are stunned silence and a prolonged stare at the focus. And I'm learning to shut up and let them make the first noise -- which is either a squeak, a scream, or a "wha-? wha-?" which makes me think that's what a deer in headlights is thinking.
But -- "people or" what are "just blown away by the watch"???? People or their perceptions? Ron: Several of Richard's routines actually *are* magic routines that he presents as mentalist abilities. With Osterlind, the line between magic and mentalism blurs, and the question becomes moot. I think this is the way he wants it, for it's very entertaining and mysterious, while remaining fun. *jeep! --Chet

Ron,
I am a magician who has just started to do mentalism (about one year now. I have to say that's a big 10-4 good buddy. THe effects from the Osterlind DVD's can fit perfectly with any traditional magic show. I endorse the watch routine and the magazine test. I have goten great reactions from both. As I'm sure your aware of: Magic is strongest when it happens in the spectators hands. With mentalism it happens in their hands, eyes and the minds of the audience. Now that's Entertainment!! Thanks, Michael and Chet - you've convinced me. If I understand correctly, the DVD set you're talking about IS NOT the "Easy to Master" series by L&L, but the other DVD series.
Also, I am really making a push not to do any more routines with cards (jumbo or regular). Is there a particular volume you think might be good to buy first? Thanks again for your help. Ron |

Ron, Ron, Ron....even if you're tired of cards, the Breakthrough Card System can change your mind about what these things can be. It's definitely one of the top three "awe creators" of mentalism, and there are evidently more ways to use it than I can imagine. (Be kind to your audience and yourself. Use only ONE BCS routine per performance.)
But to tell the truth, I'd start with Volume 1 of "Mind Mysteries." That will not only introduce you to an entire act (plus some) but will help you decide whether (a) this mentalism stuff is for you, and (b) how you want to develop your own style. And the "Easy to Master" series isn't bad either. (Even if "Easy to Master" isn't quite right. "Easy to Learn" would be more correct; you'll spend a lot of time mastering these classic, bullet-proof routines.) Enjoy the journey! *jeep! --Chet

I don't want to get going on the "Easy To Learn" namebrand all over again, but I feel I have to inject just one more thought about the subject. Besides the fact that the name really has become simply a designation like the "Dummy" books (and I certainly wouldn't hesitate to buy one of them even thought I don't consider myself a dummy!), the other factor that led to calling them "Easy To Master" has been a misconception amoung many newcomers that learning some sleights in magic were next to impossible. I have heard people say it would take them 10 years to learn to do a great second deal. This is nonsense. Anyone who has ever learned to play an instrument knows how difficult that is and yet, with diligence, it comes sooner than later. Even the most difficult sleights in magic are no harder to master than so many other things in life. Rather than turn off newbies to magic with talk of spending their next 20 years trying to become proficient, the "Easy to Master" videos are meant to show that even the best magic is within everyone's grasp.
My own personal involvement with the namebrand was to try to teach the "approach" to mentalism and the frame of mind necessary to put over the material. In truth, almost any effects could have been chosen. The goal was to show the misdirection, the mindset, the movements, the speech patterns and all the rest that makes this art successful. |

I always think that those new should be trained well rather then badly, after all, I would rather a well trained person to perform effecst and not expose or damage them compared to a badly trained misinformed new commer that has been created in the past.

Hi,
I have the Mind Mysteries series and I just want to say that I really loved them! I am still fairly new to magic and mentalism and I agree that sometimes the titles of the DVDs will turn me away from them. I still don't have the ability to perform on stage or something yet, but I have perfored some of these effects to my friends and family, metal bending, some prediction, etc, and all they did was roll their eyes big and stare at me. Haha I totally agree with what Richard had said. The titles gives the me the feeling that I will in no way be able to do those things. Then I would ignore many of the good information that is out there. But after a while in magic, I have heard people saying how long it takes to do this sleight or that. It turns out that some I can master a lot fast, some a lot slower. So it depends on your talent and also how you practise. Anyways, I am looking forward to getting the Easy To Master Mental Miracles series. But I yet have to master the stuff in Mind Mysteries first Philip |

Cfrancis, your local magic shop will be delighted to supply you with these DVDs. If you have no local magic shop (a moment of silence for all the magic shops which have closed this year), then http://www.osterlindmysteries.com/storevid.htm will put you right at Richard's doorstep.
*jeep! --Chet (If you want to buy them only one at a time, you can do that at L&L's site.)

The dvd's look like they have some great material. Ironically, I was just thinking the other day about getting my hands on some good mentalism effects. Of course, all you mentalists out there already knew that...
