Has anybody read
The full Georgia Magnet act and secret and/or The new Georgia Magnet act? Do these books have explanations of how the effects are done or do they just describe how they look to the audience? Does the 'New' book explain as many effects as the 'Full' one? I don't know which one to buy Perhaps I need both? I'm not interested in historical background only the effects themselves. Any help appreciated |

Hi TeeJay-
There are 3 books out now on it. I reprinted one (the 5 page Cassier's article), abbreviated one (her autobio) and wrote one ("the New GM Act") In the New GM Act, there is only one test that is truly of the Lulu Hurst era (the no-lift method)...the rest of the mss. discusses redressing this act for today's audiences using contemporary trix and methods. It gives my thoughts on this, and you will come up with your own approach and effects to use. It can give yuo a base to start, and save you time and effort in assembling and constructing your act. The Autobio is a reprint of her own autobiography but I've cut the repetitive and unnecessary stuff. It still contains all of her tests and her explanations of them. This is the most complete text on her tests available. It also gives her interesting story and her touring routes and anecdotes. The 2nd half of the Mss. is her explanations. the 'Secrets' book is only about 5 pages, but containes many other tests that were discovered from 'reversse engineering' appearances of other 'Magnet' performers. As to advising on which to start with, ain't got a clue. sorry. They're all good for what they do. I would guess, tho, her autobiography would give a clearer picture on her and her act, but 'The New GM act' might be a more accessible approach. I am curious as to other's response, as I am biased. Have fun, it's a hoot. Tom

Is it still as amazing today as it was back then? I been looking at this book at some online store and was wondering if it's outdated?

I was in a magic store in Vegas when Brian Gilliam (spelling?)came in with assistant who did Georgia magnet stuff in which I participated. REALLY felt magical! They got us into the show where they opened for Amazing Jonathon.MUCH stronger seeing GM done live than I expected after reading techniques in books.

Tom, I am a bit unclear about something: the "Secrets book" is only 5 page? And when was that Cassier's article originally published? Thanks

Highmagic-
The Mss."Secrets of the Magnetic Girl Explained" was an article written by Nelson E. Perry, E.M., in Cassier's magazine. It was published in 1895 and contains several additional stunts. At one time it was available on the internet, and well may be still. I published this as a Mss. for the benefit of the Lulu Hurst Society members, and made it a comercial Mss. as a convenience. It retails at $5 in order that dealers can stock it. It is 5 1/2 pages, and contains tests from later 'Magnet Girls' and Annie Abbott: a no-lift method, a method wherein the 'No-lift' abilities are transferred to a child, a horizontal broom test, a vertical broomstick test, a one man and a three man chair lift, and a second horizontal stick test. Worth reading for the additional tests. JT- Lulu Hurst was a 14 year old 100 pound farmgirl who was knocking down $1000 a night before the turn of the century with her amazing abilities for demonstrating 'The Great Unknown' (as she called it), a power that allowed astounding feats of strength to be demonstrated. There was more written about her n the newspapers, during her sojourn on the stage, than was written about anyone else in the US! Even wrestlers and a famous japanese Sumo wrestler could be thrown about the stage by this power. As an example, several men dcould come onstage and simply hold a chair in the air, tightly and with all their strength. Lulu would approach, place her hands gently on the chair and wait...at some point she would spontaneously start to giggle (and she claimed that the test would NOT work until the giggle started)...the chair would staart to buck and twist, and the men would try to keep it still.,they would end up dancing about the stage, shoved and twisted by the power in the chair, until the chair would disintegrate. She did many such tests thatwere, at the time, beyond the understanding of science, medicine nad theory. She retired in about 2 years when she became upset that the spiritualists were claiming her power was spiritualistic. many imitators jumped in, and even Anna Eva Fay and her husband wwere arrested and run out of town for imitating her, and claiming to BE her! It is fascinating reading, and the girl was one of Magic's stellar personalities. She wrote her expose in her early twenties. In defense of her honesty, she NEVER discussed her career or her stunts after the publishing of her book. I have been in contact with her great grandson, and neither his grandmother or anayone else in the family ever heard her discuss the act. There is one additional book discussing the act, Dick Williams' Lights! Camera! Magic!, and as I vaguely recall, I think a book like the Magic of Reidel discusses their own performing of the act...(correct me if I'm wrong on that one.) I have not been priviledged to witnessing Brian Gillis and Siseupan's performance, but yes, they do do this Georgia Magnet Act, and its a real winner, from what I've read.
