I know they say any press is good press but this just seems scathing.
It's not a bad review per-se but it's reviewed badly I think. Absolutely cold blooded. At first I was all excited, "Wow! check that out a magic app reviewed in the New York Times! That's awesome!" Reading the review however, seems to me as though every aspect of the effect is not only exposed thoroughly but also demeaned and belittled. Is it just me? Maybe I'm just reading it wrong, but to me the review of IForce really does more harm than good. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/11/27/techno......tml?_r=0 |

I read it. Very disapointing to see disclosure like this. I'm wondering if Greg was interviewed for this?
This isn't the place though for this topic.

"Of course" it was demeaned and belittled. The method is so stupidly simple and obvious. __ONCE YOU KNOW THE SECRET__.
I contacted the author and conveyed my dismay. You can too through this link to let them know that exposure is bad and harms not only Greg but those of us who bought and use the app: http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/......dex.html The cat's out of the bag, but the print versions will only be around a short while. Maybe they can redact the online version to remove the exposure. |

WOW!!!
I did NOT know about this and the author of this article never contacted me. I'm not happy at all about the exposure that iForce has in the article, especially considering that the methods of the other apps in the article are kept secret. Immediately after reading the article I did a search in my email inbox to see if the author had tried to contact me ... I found absolutely nothing. I ESPECIALLY don't like how the exposure devalues all of the clever things that magicians do with iForce. Many clever magicians use iForce in a MUCH deeper way than simply revealing a number for 1 to 4. Exposing the secret, in such a popular news paper, is robbing the users of iForce. When David Pogue wrote about my app back in 2010, he did so without discussing the method. At this moment, I really don't know what to do ... obviously I like the publicity this article has given my app, but I have to agree with Chris.Z that I think it's very disrespectful for the author to do this without contacting me. If any of you have any advice, I would greatly appreciate your insight and help on this matter. Greg Rostami |

Smart phones are already magic beyond what anyone could have imagined even five years ago, and the technology is getting more and more amazing every day. With all due respect to the creators of these apps, magic tricks with phones(regardless of of how well presented), will never be anything but a curiosity/puzzle. They know the phone is the secret, even if they're not exactly sure how.

Usually I would agree with that assessment, but it's not true for some of agrees apps that I have.

My brother mentioned this article to me casually in conversation and I was really shocked. Very unfair. Worse than YouTube exposure IMO.

I had integrated this app into one of my close-up effects. It's the only app I would consider using because I felt it would fly under the radar in the way I wanted to use it... and it did! Unfortunately, I will not be using it anymore. I can understand how Greg likes the publicity. I imagine he's sold what he's going to sell to the mentalist/magic communities and this will give him a nice bump in sales I'm sure. That is not a slam against Greg. It's a dichotomy, on one hand you want to keep it secret, on the other you want to make money.
Happily, all you ever need (at least for the foreseeable future) are some pencils, billets, envelopes, notepads, a mind, some skill, and a few other "invisible" tools and you're set to go. You don't even have to stay 1 step ahead of everyone, you can stay one step to the side and perform miracles. It was a good app while it lasted. |

Yes, skill can be exposed. Apps can be learned and you can teach a center tear on youtube. Lets be honest, Bob...we are fighting a battle to protect secrets, a battle that we will lose over profit.

True. Too bad there aren't many laws protecting intellectual property of magicians and mentalists. Shame.
