My feeling is that the best solution to the problem of the card being near the top or bottom of the deck is to do Mike Close's Invisible Deck Routine instead of the standard one. Of course, you'll have to throw away your gaffed to the hilt rough and smooth deck and resign yourself to never having to pay for another one. You'll also have to learn how to do a Hofzinger Cull and a half-pass. If you also know a memorized deck, your handling will be quicker and surer, but it's not absolutely necessary. Mike's routine is on the set of tapes he made for L & L, and also, if memory serves in his Workers series of books. If you learn this, the card will always be in the very center of the deck, and you can give the deck away as a souvenir afterwards, if you like.

Dave--
I like the bag idea... and will try it very soon. As to remembering the suits, I have two thoughts on that. First, for a memory device: hearts look like spades (without the tail!). Second, I know a guy who stacks his pairs so they are the same suit. That way, you only have to be concerned with the numbers. And he says no one ever notices that the "down" card is next to another of the same suit. Dennis-- Did you mean "Hofzinser Cull"? I've never heard of Hofzinger (actually, I have, but only when they were really referring to Johann Hofzinser.) |

Here are a couple of memory aids I use to keep things straight: I put the ID in the box with the ODD cards facing OUT (which should be easy to remember as they are both 3-letter words that begin with pretty much the same letter). Think of "out" as being the front side of the box (not directly attached to the box flap). To remember which suits are paired, I always remember that C & D are "back-to-back" in the English alphabet, hence Clubs & Diamonds are back-to-back in my ID. This works great for me. Geoff

ARRGH! (Self administered forhead slap) Your "system" is oh-so-simple. Here I've spent all this time struggling to remember what-way-is-which and you come along with this GREAT, SIMPLE method. I'm going to start using this immediately. Thank you so much for the great idea. bd |

Anyone have a sure-fire way for remembering the Kings? I always forget my set-up---is it ROBE or is it BORE? Mine is ROBE, (because that's what a King wears) but, I often verbally dissuade the spec from the Kings, Queen of Hearts, or Ace of Spades, because everyone picks them "But if you really want that card, feel free" No one has picked one of them yet.

BTW, I have some moderately-useful touches to make your ID routine stronger and easier. Also, if you follow these hints, your ID will not only be out of play by the end of the routine (which means it'll also be unexaminable) but you'll also be instantly reset, which is a big plus for my fellow restaurant table-hoppers here in Cafe Land. PM me and I'll send you an excerpt dealing with the ID from my 2nd lecture notes "The Lecture Your Father Never Gave You." The excerpt is free - my gift to you (hey, I'm in a good mood tonight; take advantage of it).

Once someone picked the Ace of Hearts, which I happened to know was on the very bottom of the ID. So when the invisible card was placed back into the invisible deck, I commented that my friend had stuck the reversed card on the bottom. It actually made the effect MORE amazing.
I don't worry about it now because it seems to have no relationshiop to the response, but if I were worried, I would try to remember which cards were near to the top and bottom, and just make a similar comment if they were picked. alan

I apolgize to all for my misspelling of Johann Hofzinser in a prior post. And to think that my degree is in English!
Here's an interesting thought for those few of you that may do the ID and also work with a memorized deck. Redo the pairs of cards so that the numbers of the card in your memorized stack add up to 53. For example, in the Aronson stack the 9D is card 52, and the card behind it would be the JS which is card one. One more example for Aronson stack users: the KH will be paired with the 8S. (Stack numbers 30 and 23 respectively.) This is not hard, considering you can do the quick subtraction and know what card you're looking for before you ever open the card box. However, I still feel that the best version of ID is the Mike Close routine with a regular deck. And, don't lose sight of the fact that what makes ID great is the pairing of a good comedy premise and an effect that has a very strong magical payoff. Have fun with the "invisible" card premise and your spectators will too.

when it's at the bottom or top, take a bit longer to find it, and then give it's position (close to the top or bottom) as the reason it took longer.
