Lots of my wives relatives still live in Cuba. We've had the legal ability to jump through hoops and go visit them if we wanted to, but with an Embassy there it seems much more likely.
Thoughts? Smile

Already been twice. Darn. It was nice for us Canucks while it lasted. I guess now the place will be overrun with US tourists.

See, I've never understood why we can do business with China and Russia can have "most favored nation" status but suggest that we might make overtures to Cuba and everyone starts getting upset.

Yes me. I am not sure if they make it difficult from here in England today.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

To the best of my knowledge, every nation except the U.S. and Israel allows its citizens to freely travel to Cuba. When I was there I met numerous English tourists.

And, Slim, you're not there yet:

The people at my favourite right wing, extremist, homophobic, racist, Miami-based, Cuban exile blog are having conniptions today.

I heard that Cuban cigars will be available for purchase in the USA. Don't know when this will commence, but I know my brother will be very happy Smile

***Off topic. On a trip to Russia a few years ago, I bought a 5-pack of small Cubans. Smoked one when I got home and didn't like it, at all (it was my first in YEARS, to be fair). When my mother passed, my brother stayed with me for almost a week, and we spent some really nice evenings on the patio, talking over cigars (that he selected from a cigar store) that would burn for about an hour. I was gobsmacked that a cigar could last so long. They were great, too. I'll look forward to trying to appreciate Cubans a second time Smile
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

No, they won't. At least not in any significant way. Apparently there is a LOT of misinformation floating about.

The Cuban embargo will remain in effect, and Cuba is still prohibited from exporting goods to the U.S. as before.

http://www.cnn.com/2014/12/17/politics/c......pstories

Washington (CNN) - The end of the 50-year freeze in diplomatic relations with Cuba will mean many more U.S. travelers could be on their way to the neighbor island, only 90 miles from Key West, Florida.

But the days of Havana as a glamorous destination for U.S. tourists — as it was before the Cuban revolution ended legal U.S. travel there — aren't returning quite yet. And while American visitors who do make it to Cuba will be able to return with rum and cigars, exporting them for sale in the United States still isn't in the works.

I don't smoke, at least not in any serious way. When I was in Cuba I smoked part of a cigar. And when I was in Amsterdam I smoked some, well, never mind.

But what I was going to say is this, that the first time I was in Cuba a bit of peer pressure induced me to buy some Cuban cigars ... I took them home and stuck them in a cupboard and promptly forgot about them. Of course, they were totally dried out by the time I remembered about them.

Cuban cigars are easily obtained here in Canada ... I suppose the only reason anyone buys them in Cuba is because they are "fresher" and cheaper there. But you can obtain them in Canada, should you visit us anytime soon.

I can't wait to see what my relatives think. Seems the people who have come here from Cuba are not in agreement.

I normalized diplomatic relations with Cuba 20 years ago when I got married. I've been there twice (off the books). It's about time the USA got up to speed.
The biggest question for the future is when we will normalize business relations with them, because Cuba will be a most interesting emerging market, despite their small population. The Cubans need and want EVERYTHING. All market sectors will be able to participate, and the biggest ones will be construction, construction equipment, utilities, electronics and technology, food wholesalers, and entertainment. This will all happen when the banks move in and start offering credit.
I'm also interested to see how North Korea reacts.
Will you walk into my parlour? said the Spider to the Fly,
Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy;
The way into my parlour is up a winding stair,
And I've a many curious things to show when you are there.

Oh no, no, said the little Fly, to ask me is in vain,
For who goes up your winding stair
-can ne'er come down again.

Agree 100% with what? You mean you agree they are having conniptions, or that they are a bit extreme, or you mean you agree with their views on Cuba and Obama?

So both Marco 'I need a glass of water' Rubio and Ted 'Canada' Cruz are incredibly anti-Castro and strongly oppose Obama's actions.

Both, I hear, have Presidential aspirations. If they run for the nomination, I wonder just how much emphasis they will place on Cuba. Is it a winning issue for them? I'm not sure.

I think in the general election their views on Cuba may well turn many off.
