The same place Vietnam and Bangladesh get their money. US investors will set up factories and exploit the workers and natural resources to make goods for export. Local agricultural economies will be trashed forcing Cuba to import food and pesticides. Large loans from the World Bank will be needed and never be paid off. In other words, the usual third world exploitation scenario. I hope I'm wrong.

Thanks for pointing all that out. No wonder the left is so positive about this new move!

I have definite disagreements with those on the left who think that the new developments are uncritically for the better of the Cuban people. Hindsight shows it always pays to make sure that the free blankets are not smallpox ridden.

By coincidence and out of the blue my daughter in law and her mother and father just started talking about an holiday which they had in Cuba one Christmas. Don’t you find that strange folks? Smile Anyway it seems we will now be going there soon together. The old man seems to know Cuba well from short conversation we had. I am not sure why I love the look of it. I love the colours for one thing.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

How about criticizing someone for wearing a tan suit?

I've never commented on any ones choice of suit color.

I would think Rubio has the insight to see better than any of us.

Even more than Rand Paul?

I grew up in a family that despised, not only communism, but collectivism, socialism and any “ism” that deprived the individual of his or her natural rights.

As a kid, I listened to the stories of an old Ukrainian fisherman who talked of fighting the Bolsheviks. More times than I can remember, I’ve heard horror stories of those who fled Castro’s Cuba. I ran for office to fight for the individual and against statism of any kind anywhere and yet… I think a policy of isolationism toward Cuba is misplaced and hasn’t worked.

I support engagement, diplomacy, and trade with Cuba, China, Vietnam, and many countries with less than stellar human rights records, because I believe that once enslaved people taste freedom and see the products of capitalism they will become hungry for freedom themselves.

President George W. Bush wrote that “trade creates the habits of freedom,” and trade provides the seeds of freedom that begin “to create the expectations of democracy.” Once trade begins it is hard to hide the amazing products of capitalism. The Soviets used to produce documentaries depicting poverty in America but it backfired when Russian viewers noticed that even in the poorest of circumstances you could still see televisions flickering in the windows. Once trade is enhanced with Cuba, it will be impossible to hide the bounty that freedom provides.

The supporters of the embargo against Cuba speak with heated passion but fall strangely silent when asked how trade with Cuba is so different than trade with Russia or China or Vietnam.

It is an inconsistent and incoherent position to support trade with other communist countries, but not communist Cuba.

Even the supporters of the embargo agree that it has not worked. A policy of isolationism with Cuba and engagement with China and Vietnam does not make any sense. Communism can’t survive the captivating allure of capitalism. Let’s overwhelm the Castro regime with iPhones, iPads, American cars, and American ingenuity.

Quiz: 1) Which of the three Cuban Congressmen were born in Cuba? 2)Which of the three's parents fled from Castro's Cuba because of expropriation?

I think question 1 may be poorly stated for a couple of reasons. So I am not sure what answer you are looking for.

But do let us know.
Make America Great Again! - Trump in 2020 ... "We're a capitalistic society. I go into business, I don't make it, I go bankrupt. They're not going to bail me out. I've been on welfare and food stamps. Did anyone help me? No." - Craig T. Nelson, actor.

Sorry, balducci, I should have said which of the three Cuban-American Senators etc. That should be a whole lot more clear.

Okay, well ...

I knew it was not Marco 'Thirsty' Rubio, and I knew it was not Ted 'Canada' Cruz.

There is the female U.S. Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen. If I had said it was her before, it would have been a 50/50 guess on my part. I have since looked it up, she was born in Havana.

There is another Cuban-American Democratic Senator, I might have guessed him. But I could not even remember his name. I have since looked it up, Bob Menendez, who was born in NYC.

And there is another I do not recall hearing about before, that is U.S. Representative Albio Sires (D) who was born in Bejucal, Cuba.

Which one were you thinking of?

As for the expropriation thing, I don't know. Not Rubio and I think not Cruz. Probably Ros-Lehtinen or Sires?

Correct. The answer is "none of them" to both questions. None of the three, Rubio, Cruz, or Menendez was born in Cuba; all of their parents left Cuba before Castro came to power.

My great-grandfather used to love going to Cuba. They lived in NY and had a house in Florida so they would often vacation there before the revolution. When I was little I used to check out all the souvenirs they had decorating their basement bar area. It must have been great back then.

Cuban food is awesome! Ropa Viejas, Arroz con Pollo, Picadillo... yum!

Now? I don't feel to inclined to go, there are many other place I'd consider first.

But again, if any of you go I'd gladly pay you Tuesday for a Habano today!

Smile
