On the subject of post count, it means absolutely nothing and certainly no indication of talent, knowledge or kindness...

Quality over quantity, yeah. I can agree with that. But a willingness to make those posts counts too, in my book. Learning to engage others and communicate meaningfully with them is one of the greatest things we can do for ourselves, even in regards to our ordinary lives apart from our involvement in this or any art form. Even as cruddy as some of this forum tends to be sometimes, it's certainly an opportunity to learn and grow with our communication skills.
If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere, I think. It's kind of funny, I've used different names online and in real life for the same reason. If I just completely flop and feel like I've ruined my chances with something, I learn from it and burn myself up, then resurrect myself like a phoenix, using the experience gained through my failures in ways I could never use my successes. The character I portrayed when I was a beginner is, thankfully, dead forever, but even he taught me things I still use. The only way to learn to juggle is to drop the ball a thousand times or so. After a few incarnations, you get the hang of things. That's the nice thing about the internet. Even those of us who have to learn the hard way can always come back ten years later and start over, and do it right. I like to think I'm doing it right this time. Never be afraid to make mistakes. Get out there and do things, get in here and say things, and learn as much as you can. Even getting smacked down by people you assume are total jack-holes can teach you important things in this life, and yesterday's bunch of ignorant goons might turn out one day to be seen for who they really are. Masters of the craft, who simply don't put up with immaturity and arrogance. I think the best thing I've learned in my life is that no matter how much I think I know, there are still a multitude of things waiting to be learned. These arts are like mathematics; there's so much compiled knowledge that no one person can ever hope to learn it all in even a hundred lifetimes. We all just do the best we can, and try to stay open-minded and learn what we can whenever possible. For what it's worth, if you're new here or new to magic or mentalism, there's at least one person here who will never see himself as anything but a beginner, no matter how long he's been into this stuff or how long he's been a member of any community. I will never know it all, and that's the only thing I can be sure that I know. We've got some real movers and shakers here. I'm honored to be allowed to share their company.

Like others, I've lurked for a long time because I don't like using non-free email addresses to register for forums, as you never know what they'll do with your data. There's a neat trick you can do with gmail addresses to track who may have sold your info to a spammer, I don't know if it can be done with other email addresses. It's only because I'm trying to take my practice of mentalism to the point where I'd feel comfortable performing it that I registered. Anyway, that's the first thing I've felt I could really contribute to this board . Also, as a member with pretty much no posts, I don't know that it would affect me if everything went to Inner Thoughts anyway, as I'm kept pretty busy with Corinda and Annemann anyway. The only problem that I'd see is that if I have a question about something I'm working on, it may be difficult to discuss any answers. However, if everything moves there, the way to get access to IT needs to change. Frankly, the Café should just charge a nominal one-time fee. $5 would likely weed out the people who only want to ask about how Derren did some effect, and we've all paid way more for books with less information than is available here. It's the best solution that doesn't involve de-automating the process, automatic access, and the forum makes a bit of money they can use on servers or whatnot. Thanks, David |

Charging a fee MAY suppress the one-shot question askers, but it could also lose us some of our valuable contributors. 50 posts, in my opinion, is the PERFECT means to sieve out those people who aren't really interested in being a part of the Café community. It's not too hard to do, but it's by no means going to allow instant gratification either. A nice balance. I say keep Penny, and keep the 50 posts requirement for IT. |

Any forum I've been a part of that uses post counts to unlock features, are just asking for multitudes of low quality posts. Asking people to spend money on information is a clear indicator of who is serious about it, and who is not. Even a $1 fee will stop a bunch of looky-loos. EDIT: I don't mean to imply that there shouldn't be an open forum, as there really needs to be. I just think that the current method of gaining access to the private forum could be improved. Also, I disagree that the valuable contributors would disappear for $5. I believe that the people who see the both the potential and realized value of this forum as a resource wouldn't change their mind for a small fee. |

An indicator of participation, areas of interest, willingness to share or contribute (or just ask and take), allow them to introduce themselves to us and often present an idea of their level of experience. This can be determined in 50 posts or their post count. This along with their membership date can allow other members to decide if and to what extent they would likely care to share, assist and participate with this member. I feel a post count can be quite telling. |

I certainly wasn't expecting a response from you with one of my first posts but I'll take it I would be happy to tell you a little about myself but I don't want to change the topic of the thread too much, so I will put the link to my introductory post: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=42 Again thanks for the welcome, and now I will move back to the topic: The email restriction in fact does still apply. I understand what you are saying, but at the same time I feel that if anyone is taking the time to read Penny and lurk here, they must be interested in mentalism, so isn't that enough? It's not like random people decide to google "Magic Café penny for your thoughts" and find this forum--I think anyone reading this must be somewhat interested. Also, I see what you mean about not wanting to share with people who could be anyone, but do you really know who I am, for example? I could be a lurker who decided to make an account too. Anyway, this is just my opinion so I am happy to hear if others disagree. Ben |

No. They don't Google "Magic Café- Penny for your Thoughts." They Google "How does Derren's (or David Blaine's, or whoever) ******* trick work. A publicly accessible thread on the Café is often the first result of that search.

Yeah I guess you are right Bob, but I didn't mean they would google EXACTLY what I wrote above. I just said that to make a point. Also, I think most of the mainstream magicians that laymen would google (Blaine, Copperfield, Criss Angel or whoever else) are not the ones that most Café members talk about, since Blaine and Angel especially are kind of considered to not be "real" magicians by a lot of Café members. And to be honest, unfortunately, it is so easy for anyone to google Penguin Magic's website or any other big magic retailer and buy a few tricks, so I don't know if the problem can be solved. For example, I know some street magic types like the self-tying shoelace effect, but anyone can easily google "self tying shoelace"--which I just did--and a bunch of explanations (even from websites like Howcast) popped up, many of them free videos on Youtube, etc.
Maybe I am wrong, but I was recently one of those people who didn't have a non-free email account, and therefore I am perhaps more sensitive to the matter than some of our longer-tenured members, so I was just trying to present the case for the tens, hundreds, or thousands, or however many talented magicians out there who just don't have the right email address, since they can't speak up for themselves in this case. |

If people want something badly enough, they'll do what it takes to get it.
For the record, toothfairy.com isn't blacklisted. XD It's the domain name I choose to use from my email provider, which has a veritable shipload of them on offer. I believe the restriction is actually on free email that doesn't offer paid email. Totally free? A no-go. Offers free and premium services? It might work. I could be wrong, but it's how I joined up. I'm actually starting to find my opinion on the whole subject of the Penny Dreadful section and the Insulting Thoughts section to be mutating into something completely Other. I'm starting to wonder if 99.99% of our thoughts should simply never be posted anywhere. XD
