I had the privilege of watching two new soon to be released DVDs by Chris Korn entitled "Extreme Korn" and "Radical Korn". WOW!!! If you liked the Flicking Fingers DVD, Tommy Wonder DVDs, Osterlind DVDs, Cultural Exchange DVDs, etc. then you'll love these 2 new Chris Korn DVDs. They are produced by Bob Kohler and the production quality is simply superb. Chris is a GREAT performer and thus makes these DVDs FUN to watch and learn from. And most importantly the material is just fantastic. Some of the strongest material I have seen in quite some time. Chris has long had a great reputation in the magic underground and has closely guarded his material. In these DVDs he really tips his hand.
Each DVD only contains 4 effects but man oh man it's just the cream of the crop - no fluff, no filler - just usable, strong, visual magic. They were purposely made to only contain the cream and it works - EVERY item is worth the price of the whole DVD. Radical Korn contains "3 Korn Vanish", "Brutal Deck Switch", "She Holds the Money" and "Coppa Silva". All are superb but "3 Coin Vanish" is worth the price of admission and much more. It truly looks like trick photography. Every one of these pieces is SO good. I just watched "Coppa Silva" again and the method is brilliant. It's a PERFECT walk around piece. "Extreme Korn" contains "Fire in the Hole", "One for The Bar", "Double Crossed", and "Lip-Tak Sighting". "Fire in the Hole" and "One for Bar" are two routines I know Chris USES in walk around work and they are stunning pieces, fairly easy, etc. All in all the DVDs have a range of material including coins, cards, napkins, pens, fire, etc. Most of the material is within the range of the average magician. All of the material is extremely well thought out and will clearly show why Chris has garnered the underground reputation that he has or a number of years. The production quality of the DVDs is superb! The routines are very well taught and quite clear including looks back onto the performance to see what various segments look like after they are taught. These are an absolute must have and definitely on my top picks for the year. A great start to the year. Tim Trono |

In addition to "how much", as you mention each routine is worth the price of the DVD itself? I assume they will be cheaper than some of the other great DVD releases you mentioned that had a lot more than 4 routines on each DVD.
Can you explain how Korn's compares to the various DVDs above (i.e. Finger Flickers, Osterlind, Tommy wonder, et al.)? I know each set was good, but each had different reasons WHY it was so good. One was mentalism, one was cards, and one was extremely fun to watch, etc., but I didn't think any one particular aspect was common to all of those releases. I'd hope it's a bit too early to be picking "top picks" for 2004 so soon into the new year, unless this is going to be a so-so production year for the magic industry? As you have your ear closer to the ground than most of us, Tim, are there some good releases in the pipe (without going into detail, of course) compared to 2003? Brian |

I don't think these will be available for about 3 or 4 weeks. I was fortunate to get a pre release copy from Bob Kohler for my feedback. I was so impressed I contacted Bob and asked him if he'd mind if I posted my thoughts as I didn't know his plans and didn't want to spill the beans unless he was ok with it.
As far as my comparison to the other DVDs, it is specific to the overall quality. Sorry if I was not clear on that. You are absolutely correct that those present a wide range but one similarity is that they all stand out above the pack. I just considered each of the DVDs I noted to be really an outstanding value with some super material (again each very different as you rightly indicate). I put these new Korn DVDs in my personal top picks because I was so impressed with them. I see almost every DVD that is coming out and these, for me personally, really stood out. I believe these Korn DVDs will be $30 or $35 each and for me, any one routine on these was worth that price. It's nice to see such finely honed DVDs with no fluff, no filler. To me that in itself is a big kudos to Chris Korn and Bob Kohler. There are some exciting projects in line for the next year from some of the various producers but I don't want to be too premature in discussing them and wouldn't feel right about doing so unless I had specifically gotten an ok from them. It's going to be a good year though. I know what Kohler, L&L, A-1, and Meir Yedid have lined up for the most part and it will be hot. Hope the above helps. Tim |

Tim, I appreciate your thoughts. Hopefully this will be a trend going forward, where filler material is left out in exchange for superb material. I'd rather pay for 4 quality routines as opposed to 4 average ones and 10 below-average ones. Quality over quantity, right?
And I agree with your point about the general high quality of those comparison DVDs. You don't have to only be a mentalist to enjoy and get value out of Osterlind's set, for example. Brian |

I totally agree, Brian!! I am so tired of getting filler material on videos (or in books). At least with DVDs, you can skip the bad stuff and go right to the good high quality material.
I love the idea of just having the top-notch material on the DVDs. And, like most of the others here on this topic, I would gladly pay $30-35 for a single great effect. Mike P.S. That said, I may be being too judgmental about some of the earlier tapes I own. One man's discard is another man's treasure, and, what might not "work for me" might be pure gold in another magician's hands (especially with original routining being added).

I hope these DVDs don't freeze like the Cultural X-change 2 DVD.

It was a real pleasure for me to work with Chris Korn on this project. He's a longtime friend of mine and I guarantee you'll be seeing big things from him in the mainstream.
The routines included on his DVD's have been in his repertoire for a very long time. No pipe dreams, just pro material for the real world. None of the routines are self-working, but they are well within the reach of most magicians. Chris has really thought the handlings through and made them very practical. It's important for working magicians to gather routines that will work in a variety of professional working environments. All of the routines included are close up magic. …Visually stunning and real workhorses. You already have all of the objects you will need to work through the material. You will find details that are usually left out. Chris just doesn't say, "Use your favorite method". He has the best methods and shows you how. Chris travels the world performing these and other unpublished gems. The proof will be seen nationwide on his first special this year on the Travel Channel. Chris and his good friend JB Benn will knock your socks off when it airs. No date scheduled as of this time. I've change DVD replicators for my new projects after we received a bad glass master for Cultural Xchange 2. This problem is now solved. I issued new copies of Cultural Xchange 2 to all dealers. If you bought a bad copy just return it to where you purchased it for a new copy. |

There is no JB Ben DVD. I think this was meant as a joke. The Korn DVDs have been highly anticipated by those who had heard rumor of these and they are definitely worth the wait. As I indicated above I think they are a few weeks off.

Slightly different topic, but you can also get a Chris Korn Lecture, from the 2002 International Magic Convention. It is available from International Magic in London. The production is not as good as it was filmed in a lecture, but it is still great.

I've been working on "Coppa Silva". It's VERY good. When I watched the performance of this I was fooled and the method is subtle but very deceptive. Don't pass this one up. This and "Three Korn Vanish" are my favorites.
Tim UPDATE: Feb 13, 2004 I just heard that the Korn DVDs shipped from the replicator over the past day or two so they should be available from your favorite dealer soon. Don’t miss these. Tim |
