"Do you believe in coincidence?"

If they say "yes", you respond, "What a coincidence, I do too!"

If they say "no." You respond, "What a coincidence, I don't either.

"Second Sight" from John Luka's book "L.I.N.T." (Luka In New Tops) is really funny and a real fooler.

Don't let the method stop you. Try it out on the public.

Why do you want to combine mentalism and humor?

Why? because I think it is a very nice way to perform mentalism. I use to mix humor and mentalism( I mean I do not make jokes, I just say comedy lines), and I do not forget that the effect has to be very strong. So I ask you, why not? Smile

And now I will perform an effect that is like mind over fact if you had a mind like mine, it really doesn't matter.

Mentalism without humour and comedy is deadly boring and not entertaining. The best mentalists I've seen weave humour into their routines and don't take themselves that seriously.

Mentalism has to have the odd joke involved. A serious and heavy mentalist performer will soon become deadly boring without any comedy.
Trust anyone who has gone through it.

You can't beat a bit of humor to spice up the show. But the best kind of humor comes naturally. I wouldn't try to force any jokes if you can't pull them off. Keep your audience in mind.

In addition to funny lines, you might want to listen to audio of the Amazing Kreskin working. He didn't really use many gags; his humor stemmed naturally from his interactions with the audience. This is a very good performer to listen to, and learn from.

"Where can I listen to Kreskin performing", you ask? Right here, at the Magic Audio Archive:

It has also occurred to me to combine the right kind of comedy with mentalism. I think it can be done, for more reasons than we have room to explore here. Suffice it to say that if the power to read minds is something hidden in al of us, and some of us are funny, sooner or later there's going to be a funny mentalist.

Besides, if you can't mix mentalism and humor, you're going to have a hard time explaining all the top-notch mentalists who play comedy clubs.

Anyway. One day, I realized that the procedure of a mental routine was nothing more complicated than the elimination of four of five objects. Why not smash them? And, following David Letterman and Galliger, why not make the objects food, and stuff that just smashes good?

So that's what I did. The audience saw a stack of twinkies, a cream pie, a Big Mac, an egg, and a bottle of cooking oil on a plank resting on two saw horses. As items were eliminated, my assistant obliterated them with a Huge mallet (imagine a block of wood on the end of a 4' galvanized pipe) The egg was smashed between two bricks. If the spectator named the oil, he reluctantly went over and drank the bottle of oil.

Whatever was left, we had predicted it. Written across the bottom of the plank, for instance.

Great reaction sfrom the right crowd. Worth the mess? Yes, when I was younger. Now, I just do billet stuff.

Using a brain-wave deck, I ask the spectator to think of any card.

"But please don't be influenced or SPADE by anyKing I say."

Try it, it creates laughter, easies the tension and provides some misdirection that I'm using embedded commands rather than a gimmicked pack.

You won't know till you try.

Always thinking..........?

Curtis, I can't imagine having to drink the oil, but the idea of humor created by the routine is great. The "one-liners" that you could create around the situations within the routine should also be funnier as they would appear more spontaneous. Great idea!

First thing I need you to do is make your mind a complete blank...that was quick!

have you ever had your mind read before? you have not, are you married? then you have!

you don't wish to change your mind do you? In other words you're satisfied with the one you have
