It is nice to see all the great reviews rolling in. I knew when I was editing the book that the content was extremely special and when I actually held a copy for the first time, it exceeded all expectations I had as regards quality.
I've only endorsed two books this year - Bairn and this (both widely agreed to be excellent), and each time I did, I had read a good portion of the contents. Stefmagic - I can understand your initial skepticism, especially as I am friends with Looch, but I think in the face of such widespread and overwhelmingly positive feedback, I can gently tease you by posting this video link: http://www.videojug.com/film/how-to-admi......ose-face :) Best, Atlas |

Allow me to begin this post by saying that I appreciate when a 'new member' writes a favourable review of a product there are often cries of shill or hyperbole; let me assure you that while my posts on the forum have been few and far between over the years and I am not that active on the Café, I felt compelled to share my thoughts on The Black Project, simply because it is SO good. In light of this, I am hopeful my somewhat meagre post count will add more weight to my comments.
To be clear, I am not connected to Looch in any way other than having been a customer over the past few years, but, like many who have posted on this thread before me, I have long been a fan of his thinking, approach and teaching style. His previous works have all delivered and TBP is certainly no exception. Having purchased many physical releases over the years, it's rare to find something of this quality, both in terms of look and feel and content. This is definitely one of those books you'll feel proud to own for years to come: the workmanship is second to none and you can see this has been a labour of love from beginning to end. I wanted to absorb the entire content of both volumes before sharing my thoughts, but knew halfway through the first book that this was going to be pure gold. The mix of real life memoirs, lessons and experiences interspersed amongst the effects was great and really gives a wealth of added value to the overall experience. I feel Looch has really given us so much more than just a series of great effects (which, I might add, would have been great on their own); what you have is something rarely shared or discussed: the real world experience of one of mentalism's busiest performers who has been honing his craft through much trial and error. For that, I thank Looch, as it's these tweaks and subtleties I believe have the most value to performers and practitioners of our art. Moreover, Looch has one of the most accessible teaching styles I've experienced - no fluff, no BS and what you see is what you get. This is underpinned by an unquestionable level of integrity, modesty and sense of humour that shines through in his writing style. It's often said that if one can find even one or two effects from a release that can be used in one's performances it's 'worth the price of admission'. While I can only speak for myself, I would be confident in saying there is a great deal more than that available for anyone looking at investing in hard hitting, practical and truly workable mentalism. Moreover, the ideas are shared and expanded upon by a great group of Looch's friends and cohorts, so you're getting a really well-rounded product. I would hazard a guess at this being a top mentalism product for 2015 and wholeheartedly encourage anyone who hasn't yet made the decision to purchase to do so, and can see this as a great investment. To make this review somewhat more balanced, the one small gripe (and this is more me being more anally retentive than most - I'm a stickler for these things) is there were a few very minor editorial and layout flaws and discrepancies, which I have brought to Looch's attention. Having said that, I appreciate the amount of time and effort that would've gone into this project and, oftentimes one is at the mercy of other people, budgets and time constraints. In summary, buy this release while you still can - you will be glad you did so. Thank you Looch (and friends) for this wonderful release, and thank you Café members for considering my review. Thank you for the review Elliot Marx! This looks like a gorgeous set and filled with nuggets of wisdom and routines.
I'm curious in terms of percentages - any idea how much strolling Looch does in his work compared with Parlour & stage?

Thought I'd share this email that I received from Marc Spelmann last night...
Looch, it's stunning, genuinely this is absolute class and is destined to be a collectors piece. I own The Mind & Magic Of David Berglas which now changes hands for almost a thousand pounds and I'd be very surprised if TBP didn't do the same. It is easy the finest produced set of books I own, Steve, Phill & yourself have done a truly outstanding job. "Never judge a book by it's cover" it's hard not to with TBP but the contents is superb, one of the elements I absolutely love and is something I apply in my lectures are the true stories, your humility and discussion on your mistakes & successes is a breath of fresh air. I love telling my horror stories, they help us grow and if someone hasn't made a few big mistakes in their career then they simply have not performed enough. I remember you telling me about '5 hours late' but forgot until I read it in the book. The effects are as always superb, The Score in book 2 is a favourite and I use a similar principle in a very different way, yours is wonderful and my mind is racing with variations. These are not simply books of a collection of tricks, more a journey with you over the last ten years, it's invaluable to any worker or potential worker. It is a guide, road tested with all the bumps on display so we can try to avoid them.. Like I said 'It's stunning' I thought I knew what to expect but TBP in its final form surpassed that tenfold... Marc Spelmann --------------------- Kind regards Looch |
