Road to Bizarrest Gathering.
Take a hand full of Bizarrest's and a couple of magicians who have the opportunity to listen to the experience of a performer well versed in this specialized magic form. Set them in a family room in the woods of Washington State on a couple of drizzly days in January to discuss spooky magic. Add a huge, quick tounged and loving Rodesian Ridgeback named Duffus, 3 cats and a cute 7 year old we called Lizzie and a patient mistress of the manor, Shannon. The stage is set for just about anything. Oh and not to forget the mystery who is "Blaze". Yitzhak, Leland, Randy, Charlie and Pete. Vastly different backrounds with one common bond of wanting to learn what Mike is willing to teach us. Which turned out to be EVERYTHING we wanted. And I mean up close and personal, just like the backroom in Martinka's. Getting the cream in a way I have not be privileged to be a part of in 2 lustrum. So many lights of understanding went on, we were blowing fuses. Mike's reputation is enough for most of you to imagine how great his instruction was. Simple, clean and marvelous. It was what everyone else shared that was such a wonderful treat. Yitzhak took us on a trip thru Jewish mysticism and story telling that engrossd even those with no backround in the culture. His presentation was just amazing and entertaining. He proved the application of the principals of Bizzarest routines are limitless and cross all boundaries. Charlie brought up a TON of props he created as well as presents in the form of items none of the rest of us would have thought to search out from a specialized reading deck from Germany to authentic photo album pages to make a vintage family album and much more. he shared his techniques for aging paper, boxes and many other props, giving me the courage to go even further in my own prop creation. Too bad he had to get back home so early, but I hope he can share more time with us next time. Randy and Leland brought a sponge like need to learn this new magic form. Asking questions with an enthusiasm born from a desire to absorb as much of what Mike was giving us, as they could. It looks like that experience has brought a couple of converts to the Dark Side. I mostly took notes, filmed, and was dazzled by the wealth of knowledge we never got to. Smaller events with equal footing of people may be the way of the future for magic Gatherings. The local ring or club is good, however the planing, saving for and attending with others that have a better understanding of the regular hobbyist or local Pro is really special. It cost me about the same in travel, lodging expenses as the other large conventions. What I came away with from this Gathering was not a bag of impulse purchases, but solid principals and methods I can apply to routines I come up with and how to make the props to perform those routines. Or even better, how to go propless. What started as a visit to see a friend, turned into a friendship expanding experience. Thanks Boys for the start of great memories, learning and fun. Thanks Shannon and Scott for the vittles to keep our strength up for our studies. And Blaze, you know what you do for the family, Thank you my friend. Looks like the plan may be to keep tracking southward with the next stop in Portland for the Northwest Gathering. Plenty still to learn, so I look forward to the opportunity to absorb more. Selah, Pete

Not to forget a visitation from Uncle Oss E., may he rest in peace! Pete's presentation of what he is doing with W.S. was particularly impressive. All the carefully chosen artefacts he has collected, or produced, draws you right in. You can't help it. I loved conversing to Uncle Ossie through Pete's custom built spirit lamp. I can't wait to see his progress next year.

To be sure Pete's rendition of WS has got to be the best I have seen. he took it from a one off trick and turned it into a night of theater.
I can not wait for next year............. |

The best thing so far about the Gathering is how the learning continues. Between Yitzhak's storylines and Mikes continued proding, things did not stop when we all went back home. I expect further input from others as the year goes on. It is like a continuation course and it is keeping my interest and excitement stoked to a constant level without the post conventions drop I have experienced in the past.
Received the shrunken head to go with the toe, ear and eyeball. The base material to make a Hand of Glory is on the way, in the form of a skeletons left hand. Charlie Rousseau shared his magnificent Hand at the Gathering and "dun flung a cravin on me" to make my own. Hey Yitzhak, howz about finding a town named Jerusalem in Oregon.
