First, the news story:

Quote:
‘The Interview’ Brings In $15 Million on Web

LOS ANGELES — “The Interview” generated roughly $15 million in online sales and rentals during its first four days of availability, Sony Pictures said on Sunday.

Sony did not say how much of that total represented $6 digital rentals versus $15 sales. The studio said there were about two million transactions over all.

OK, drop the "roughly" statements, and assume that "The Interview" generated exactly $15 million in online sales, and there were exactly 2 million sales.

Since Sony didn't say how the split went, can you work out how many $6 digital rentals and $15 sales of "The Interview" occurred?

So $6 times X plus $15 times Y equals $15,000,000 and X plus Y equals 2,000,000 ....Is that it?

Yes, not that difficult to solve for a (young) teenager.

Very often, the main problem seems to be able to formalize the (actually, any) problem.
So much to do, so little time . . .

Solving simultaneous equations, the number purchased is 333,333 rounded off to nearest whole number.
And yes algebra is necessary. And so is art, music, literature, physics, history ...

Looks like everyone's got it now.

X= number of rentals
Y= number of sales

6x + 15y = 15000000
x + y = 2000000

Take the second equation and isolate:
Y = 2000000 -x

Now you can substitute to get the value of x.

I laughed when I read the quote. It was ambiguous until they conveniently provided exactly enough information to solve.
