New legislation put in place on 1st Jan could screw all suppliers of digital goods over big time.
As a supplier of digital services to EU consumers you have to register for VAT in EVERY EU country you supply to, and that is regardless of if you are under thw VAT threshold. https://www.gov.uk/vat-on-digital-services-in-the-eu Lots of businesses, bands and writers have actually stopped trading digital products as the new law is almost impossible to follow. http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/2d77e358-74c4-......O7DfVfOk As a result I'm looking into my options regarding the sale of my digital products such as the MM and Freddie's books but it's not looking great. This new legistlation will just increase file sharing and put smaller businesses out of business. A sad future on the digital front.... |

Yes there appears little option than to cease trading to the EU for fhe small producer unless you use a third party supplier like Lulu or Amazon....

It is sad indeed. These new regulations will certainly drive many independent sellers out of business.
The easiest solution for ebook writers and other creators is to sell their products through one of the major online distributors (e.g., Lybrary). The distributor is then responsible for handling all the VAT registrations, records and payments. Mike |

It kind of defeats the whole idea of being an independent artist. Worse still they are bringing this legislation in an ALL mail order products to the EU from 2016 so thousands of UK small businesses will close as a result. |

The only way is to go old school and start printing again however, from 2016 your printed products will be subject to the same ruling.
One loophole that has been discovered is that if the book is not listed as an ebook or digital download i.e. A physical item and then after purchase it is sent via email as a 'back up' copy of the 'physical' version (which of course there isn't) you don't have to pay the VAT. The trick is letting the customer know this beforehand. |

It's always worth looking a little 'left of field' to come-up with a legitimate way round the issue. I'm VAT registered and due to my trading level within the EU, I have an extra level of bureaucracy to comply with - A total nightmare!
I agree with your loophole Dan... For now, offer the e-book free of charge & change the purchase terms. It's a daft ruling... Maybe those in charge will realise this & the change in 2016 will get dropped... Maybe?? |

I think you're right. They'll see how it is crippling the small businesses and maybe set a digital sales or sales to the EU threshold.
Fingers crossed! |

It's all just going to force humanity into another dark age.
But I think that's what they all want. Make everyone work for someone else, who pays off the man for the right to produce and distribute things. Can't have all the commoners thinking they can be merchants, now can we? The merchant class is powerful, and we can't allow the individual any form of freedom or self-empowerment. How can you maintain a slave economy if everyone's got the chance to be their own boss? Better to keep them all rounded up under "authorized" overseers.
'Tis an ill wind that blows no minds.

Sorry to hear that Dan. I agree, don't list it as digital and work around it, your customers will understand and so will big brother...

And I know all my employees saved $2,500 on health care like our President promised and I only had to fire 9 of the 10 I had in my small business and I cut his hours to 29 a week so I didn't have to count him as a full-time employee. Wink... you're the kettle calling the pot black. |
