For those concerned about exposure, consider this: Houdini exposed mediumship a century ago. Yet the Long Island Medium, Van Pragh, John Edward etc, all make a good book. Sylvia Whatserface was exposed repeatedly; she died very, very rich. Now, of course these people prey on the bereaved but still--just contemplate their longevity.
I think exposure is less important than some think.

Houdini's exposures pretty much wiped out physical mediumship. Afterwards, most mediums took the mental mediumship and channeling routes.

I don't think exposure affects magic much at all, it is certainly not a great enemy. Your average person really doesn't care how it's done and magicians really are pretty good at keeping secrets.
The real problem is bad magicians. If someone sees one bad performer, then they're all bad. |

I was just thinking, - did the Masked Magician's exposure shows have much of an impact on the magic business in general? Were any of you negatively impacted and if so, to what degree?
I only saw a couple of shows so I don't know if he exposed any mental effects or not. |

Doug,
Thanks for the feedback and the link. I am not familiar with how the MM affected you. I'll do a search and see if I can catch up on your experience. Thanks again. |

Doug,
I found the thread and read all the posts pertaining to the Masked Magician. I'm sorry to hear about your negative experience, I really am. Life has a way of throwing us curveballs from time to time, but from my experience, what appears as a negative within a small framework may actually be a positive when placed within a larger framework. You said it caused you to change the way you do magic so perhaps that's a good thing. Sometimes, what we perceive as a negative, may actually help us to rise to a higher mental level. Although at the time it is happening, it certainly doesn't seem positive. From what I can ascertain from your comments, you certainly appear to be on solid ground. I say, onward and upward my friend. |

I think most people go to a mentalist show to be entertained. They don`t have the time or energy to search for answers, and they don`t care.
We will always have younger people that will explore and try to figure out what was going on. And when they think they have found an answer and post it on youtube or facebook, I believe very few will notice it. I see it all the time on the popular talentsshows we have on TV. If you follow the youtube treads after a mentalism performance there are some who is spot on, but the following posts are about how fantastic this was, and he must have secrets powers. People don`t notice it when someone actually hit the nail on it`s head. As mention before. Derren Brown concur this problem early in his career, but when I got to see him in summer 2013, he had sold out shows in London for several months. Because he has a very good stage character, and his show is very entertaining. I don`t think the around 2000 people in the audience that night went straight back home to their computers and started searching for answers. They go out after with their friends and talk about the cool show they just saw, they talk to their colleagues at work the next they, and tell them about all the funny parts, and mind blowing parts. People will of course discuss how he did it, but we live in a time consume era and people have not got the time to study books, dvd`s and follow youtube treads by youngster who try to reveal stuff. And I was also entertained, even if I knew what was going on. I think that is an important point we sometimes forget. We work with entertainment, and people pay to be entertained and have a good time, not to reveal us. |

You said it caused you to change the way you do magic so perhaps that's a good thing. Yeah, gotta admit, I am studying mentalism now. I've got some Bob Cassidy material, and his generous help if I need it. Plus, the occasion appears from time to time, where magic is the PERFECT ice breaker! But that is rare. Quote:

Doug,
Thanks for the welcome. Quote: "...Then patronized, patted on the head, and just infuriating comments like, "Awww, you're still a good magician!..." - Doug Condescension, arrogance, superciliousness, etc. sure are strange "animal qualities" and serve no constructive purpose. Well, it's a sunny day where I am and I hope it's a sunny day where you are as well. |
