Hi guys,
I love this trick. I just wanted to know if anyone performs this whilst busking/street performing? How does it go? I'm wondering that the effect may not be suitable if the crowd gets too big, they may not be able to follow whats going on? Rich |

Well, I think it could be good for showing a couple/group of people, getting their reactions to lure more people and then move to the stuff that plays bigger to hold and build the crowd.

I jut took time to watch "stand up monte by garrett thomas" on You Tube.
Tricks fall into three broad categories: Close Up, Parlour, and Stage. Say, viewed in order of from as far as 2 yards, 5 yards, and well back further. See Jimmy Talksalot book "To Lure with Spectacle..." I reckon the Stand Up Monte is a Close Up trick, and agree with C.J.Magic that it best suits as a trick to get the first two or three or five folk stopped. It's a good idea to have a few quick close-up tricks from which you pick one or two for what is called "the Draw" to get maybe 5 folk in front of the performer before the set Magic Show starts. In the past I've spent too much time on doing the close-up tricks before a Show.I'm working on getting enough people around to start the Show proper, and then doing it. So,after one or two close-up tricks which include greeting the core people of your show and getting to know them, announce that you have a short? Magic Show. Tell them during the Show that you are going to hat them at the end and you'd appreciate them giving a donation [especially do this before the Finale/final trick so they don't walk off immediately after the last trick]. Get it in your mind that your Magic Show doesn't finish until the hatting is over. And then make yourself available for short discussion with those who want to talk to you as an individual. Then look for the next few people to do the Draw for.
The presentation makes the magic.

It depends on the kind of show you do. If you perform a longer show for 30-40 people, it probably isn't for you. If you perform a quick sidewalk show for 5-10 people, maybe you can make it work. even if you do a large show you could use it as an opening trick for your first group.

I do use stand-up monte in the early part of my show, for the first few people. It is very strong, visual magic. I only do 4 phases. I do the first three phases using the table to hold the 3rd card, then do the final phase in a spectator's hands as a finale to the trick. By the way, Garrett also sells a larger set of cards, not as big as jumbo cards, but larger than regular cards, which allows the trick to be more easily seen by a bigger group of people.

Just watched Garrett Thomas version on you tube. It a nice routine and see it having prenatal or the street.
-It involves spectators, -Lots of phase which you can join with patter, -Any time a viewer joins they can catch up, -It is close up but that will help to pull the first few people closer. Some of thoses last phase could be done with the spectater standing away from you so wideing it up a bit. Good luck and be nice to here how it gose.
Enjoy your magic,
and let others enjoy it as well! |

Not being too much of a busker myself, I will have to agree with what most people have said so far, but I tend to think that all of what was said is not specific to Stand-up-Monte. If you use smaller props, the number of people you are working for is automatically smaller, is it not? So, the question comes down to: Is Stand-up-Monte a good close-up packet-trick? Enough about that has been said about that here on the Café ...

Performed the trick today as part of a corporate training session. Quite comfortably had 6 people standing around - so I'm sure I could demonstrate it comfortably up to around 10 spectators.
I am running some larger training groups later this month. I'll give it a test then in front of 12-13 pers. |

I see Shaun has been posting lately, and sharing what his set show for the street is comprised of.
He mentions the Stand-up Monte at http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......rt=150#9 as his finale and I've asked him if he wants to share how he does that.

I also mentioned that the list was "in no particular order..." the Stand-up Monte just happened to be the last one that I added to the list. My apologies. I also must add that I do think you could easily close with the Stand-up monte as it is STRONG and amazing magic. I just think that it would better fit in the build spot since it is also easily repeatable. Thanks for hearing my opinion. Later... |

I want to try Stand Up Monte to draw, but I will be doing fans and flourishes with a pack of cards before with music until the first group, person or couple stop, any sugestion on how to get from using full deck into Stand up monte? What motivation? If I'm using a deck of cards and want to show a card trick with only three of them, just take them from the deck it's the natural action but since I start with them in outside jacket pocket, any recomendation?
Thanks Helder

How many of you have heard of the game 3 card monte?" As you say this, you put your deck away, take out your monte cards from another pocket (I see no reason to take them out of the same deck), and you're off and running. |

Helder if I were you I wouldn't use music at first. Perhaps later when you're better at busking but if you intend to do this long-term my advice is to forego thge music and gimmicks like Fire etc and just use your personality and some quick visual magic to stop people.

I open with," long before there was texas hold em on tv, there where many other kinds of gambling games.
Faro, blackjack and five card stud among others. With the money and gamblers, around, hustlers invented games to fleece the unsuspecting. One way they did it was find the queen." Then out comes the queen from the pocket. This works well enough to get the party started. It can also lead into tricks based on hold em or the other card games you name. |
