This has come up on another thread and it really needs it's own spotlight.

On the "Official" Trick of the Year thread we cast our votes for our favorite effects of this past year. Many of us have done that already. But there is another honor the community can bestow, and if you have not already done so, I would like to suggest that your nomination for this year's Thurston Award go to Prof BC.

The Thurston is a relatively new award and is given to someone who not only created an effect over the last year, but to someone whom represents the true 'Spirit of Magic'. This is described by the contest rules as someone who "offers great customer service, and their kindness is a gift to the community." To me, that choice is clear.

Prof BC is one of the most prolific, innovative and inspired creators we have in our bizarre community. This year he brought us two new Doppelgänger titles and Resurrection Cemetery Gate Key, alongside refreshing the supply of Outcast Dead and Haunted Inn's to meet the demand. His generosity with his time and talent is incredible. His spirit of service and customer satisfaction is stellar. He is a mentor, a sounding board, and an encouraging force to many.

On a thread over in the DoppsForum the Professor was praised for his excellent customer service and his response was very telling. He said that the secret was simple. He didn't think of us as customers, but as "performers and friends".

Many thanks, Professor, for sharing the true Spirit of Magic with us this year.

Please join me, and many others, in nominating Prof BC for the Thurston Award over on the Trick of the Year thread.

Tho, ProfBC is most deserving ! I had to go with Doug, for all his years of giving.
And, BC can always be up for this award for the next 75 years ! Smile

I feel like an idiot. I really do.

At first I voted for this award following the most up-to-date posts for effects and creators, which may have been based on recent popularity and buzz for "hot" effects...but not on what Mr. Jamie Grant had founded "The Houdin" awards on: "This award will awarded to a creator who created an effect in 2013 and who represents the true Spirit of Magic. Great customer service, kind, and a gift to the community."

But everyone, please remember...as I read it, this is NOT a lifetime achievement award. It is awarded to the best effect in a year, created by someone who "represents the true Spirit of Magic. Great customer service, kind, and a gift to the community."

So, shame on me for not researching further. I will yet again - due to my inept recollection and fact-finding - amend my post on the award thread to reflect the following:

1. The Knowing Game by Steve Peebles
2. Shakespeare Dopps by Prof BC
3. Inferno by Bobby Hasbun
4. Ash by Outlaw Effects
5. Mummy's Dilemma by Doug Higley

You really don't have to feel bad Smile

I'm confused the Thurston for 2013?? Should that not read 2014? Because Andy Nyman and The Code won it in 2013.

The Houdin for 2014 (is for favorite, period, so popular trick of the week counts as well) Submit only 3:
"What is your favourite effect that was released in 2014?"
"Please submit up to 3 entries and we'll tally them up on Feb.01."

The Thurston Award (is for spirit of magic etc):
"This award will awarded to a creator who created an effect in 2013 (should be 2014) and who represents the true Spirit of Magic. Great customer service, kind, and a gift to the community."

Recap:
"Vote with Trick Name and the Creator Name for Trick of the Year (Houdin). Please submit 3 Entries."
"Submit 1 Trick Name and Creator Name for Customer Service/Spirit/Kindness of the Year (Thurston)"

Thank you Darkness.

By suggesting I not feel bad with an emoticon, yet giving me reasons to feel bad, I now feel bad. Very bad. So please send me some fun, uplifting emoticons to correct.

Here is my updated voting based upon corrected direction:

1. The Knowing Game by Steve Peebles
2. Shakespeare Dopps by Prof BC
3. Inferno by Bobby Hasbun

Carry on. All is well.

Yes, worry not, Wiz. There's some confusing cut-and-paste text (as Darkness points out) with regard to the year and right on down the line.

Darkness' recap grooves with my understanding as well. Thanks for posting that, Darkness. The Thurston is not a lifetime achievement award, it simply goes to a creator of an effect this year that embodies the 'Spirit of Magic' referenced above.

HA well since you mentioned it.... Smile
I meant it more for a re-cap to put things straight, not to single you out of course. I like you Smile I reserve the honor of being singled out for people who are truly deserving. You know who you are ha! Ok settle down Smile

We are glad you raised the issue because the original thread Jamie posted had the wrong date as 2013 (you did not).
No worries either way we are family here.

Since we are talking about this, one of the reasons I'm holding off voting is I feel there are so many deserving entrants, it's sad for me to not give credit to them all. I may not vote because of that, not sure. It's a bit of a stacked popularity contest in the guise of giving acknowledgement (which you should do all year around). Counter to my principles in general but nice for the creators to get recognition. I still have time....

Sorry, I only have smiley faces I'm a little lame and lazy in that department. Yes love the new Avatar Perkins!

I feel much better now, after all the 'lifetime' comments.
I did not make a purchase from ProfBC in 2014, so I could not have voted for him.

Technically there is no mention of buying anything to make your consideration, it's not even implied but maybe assumed. I honestly don't think your vote would not count. You are a respected long time customer I'm sure your opinion counts maybe even more than most...

Add to the above list of PROF BC offerings for this year; GYRE (can’t believe I left that off the list!) and his astounding new book Phasmology (I have to force myself to put it down after every chapter. I want to devour it completely, but there are so many lessons to be savored.) It’s required reading now. Put it on the Bizarre Syllabus.

This was an incredible year of products and service from this creator, and he’s within half a plank of receiving this “Thurston Award” from our magical community. Go check it out. If you haven’t taken the time to vote do it now and let’s get one of our celebrated bizarre practitioners this well-deserved accolade.

I can't think of anyone in the world who deserves it more.

I cast my vote. There's still time for those of you who haven't!

Maybe it should be called the BC award of excellence Smile

Just put in my votes today, have to admit was a tie breaker of which 3, but Thurston for Prof BC was hands down for me !
I also feel he deserves this for all he has done for us with his effects as well as all the extra time he spends with help adding to manuals for other effects too !

I still wonder how he has time to do all this AND have a life !!?? Seriously........hope you win Prof Smile

Are there any awards for bizarre magic? The "Cameron" perhaps?

I voted for the leaders in our category to give one of them the best chance to win, I didn't want to waste my vote so to speak in that regard. It is a contest first and foremost (and props).
Lets face it, they all deserve awards, too many to mention and honestly how can you compare them? The ones I voted for I also thought were deserving.
Congrats to all those who received a nod.

Darkness has it right. It is the nod that is most appreciated, and I gave mine to Doug Higley (and would again).

I deeply appreciate the gesture, guys; I won't say awards mean nothing (they are very nice, and the winner has every right to be extremely proud of it) but I'm that strange little guy who honestly feels that the mention is enough. Dear me! Much more than enough. Quite unexpected, in fact.

I only hope to continue to earn your good opinion.

Thanks sincerely,
BC
