So I just came up with something I've never read about. A method or improvement on something.
How do I figure out if something has been writen about this? Normally for study I can use google or a library, but as the natural secrecy about mentalism its very hard to look into things. How would one continue on this journey? |

Hey. I found this website. It gives a list of contents for a lot of books. Don't know if this would be any use to you.

The next step is to ask people who are more knowledgeable than you if it has been done before.

Film it, publish it through Ellusionist and claim you've been doing it for years... seems to work for other people

Most of the time the new thinking is only a different way of doing something. In my past I use to be really great with cards. And when learning new effects there might be a move that I didn't like because I knew of another way of doing it. Or I might use my hand to cover a move because it was very demanding. Is this a brain storm and lighting flash moment? No, it isn't. It is just your mind telling you that there are other ways to get to the same end.
I remember someone had a great card effect that involved some card moves. Everyone was talking highly of it. After reading the description, I thought to myself, why do all that work when a marked deck would get me there faster and with new problems of messing the effect up. So.... Is this a new effect/routine or just another way of doing something that is already out there? Best Ray |

Phren,
I don't understand if your question is hypothetic or practical. The biggest library for research you can find is: conjuringarts.com. If you're 100% sure that you have found something really spectacular, you could try the contact a Grand Master you can trust, like Bos Cassidy (mastermindreader) or Richard Osterlind. Both have a profound knowledge of the art of mentalism. They can tell you if an effect or method is new or not. |

It's a method, not an effect. I misread something in paralies from joshua quinn which I thought was brilliant... when I reread the piece it didn't say what I thought it said, but the thing I thought about was still very smart. But I need to work it out.

Contact experienced mentalists you trust. Do not post any details here or elsewhere online. Once you have private feedback from more knowledgeable folks, you will know whether or not your insight is indeed unique.

Why not contact Joshua, directly? If anyone knows the lineage of an effect in his book, I'm sure he would know. Outside of that, enjoy the cleve idea you came up with, and refine it. Then - keep it to yourself and lord it over the rest of the mentalism community =)

I would ask a knowledgeable person on the Café, such as Bob Cassidy or Greg Arce.

Seems to me that if you got the idea after reading something by Joshua Quinn, you ought to ask him about it first.

My advice? Contact Greg Arce...his knowledge about the history of magic and mentalism is like no other...and the man is so humble and honest...a true gentleman.

I agree with the above posts recommending contacting Joshua first.
In the meantime, maybe practice your method, and then performance test it. Then at least you'll know if it's worth the time and effort you're thinking of possibly putting towards it. I've had a lot of great ideas, some inspired by others, some spontaneously arising, which really weren't so great once I'd actually tried them out. At least you'd know if it was any good, or an actual improvement on anything. I think that's even more important than tracing whether it's been published before or whatever.
'Tis an ill wind that blows no minds.

I would say to work it out a bit more, write it up, practice it some - see if its really something worth sharing and it is at least workable...then contact Joshua and ask him if its ok to send it on....

For now I'll just work it for a while, indeed finding out of it's at least workable. I've tried it a few times now and it works but it's fragile, words are important. So as soon as I know what to say exactly, I'll work it out and send it to Joshua.
Thanks for all the good advice, got a direction now |
