Hey there,
How many of you will be participating in the Tough Mudder event immediately prior to MINDvention this year? Tough Mudder in Vegas this year (which happens to be the world championship course I believe)is Oct 17-18 and MINDvention runs Oct 18-20, so it was a no brainer for me, Tough Mudder then MINDvention (only 1 plane trip!). Curious if there is going to be a mentalist/magician/psychic entertainer group running in the TM event together. Ok, hopefully it's obvious why I posted in Penny but just to doubly make sure (and please don't respond with "Do a search", I'm adding this so it stays in Penny for sure): What are your favorite packet effects that you do with ESP cards? By packets I mean less than the entire deck. And the ESP cards can be "special" in some way or just generic ESP cards. I'll share a couple of mine, "Bob's Your Uncle" from Doug Dyment in Mindsights and Bubby Kneel from Devil of a Bar and Pub (both sources highly recommended but don't get them, I want these sources all to myself). The first one was written specifically for ESP cards while the second uses standard restaurant/bar coasters but is easily modified for use with ESP cards. Each of these tricks uses a total of 10 cards (2 of each shape). Ok, so to review why this is in Penny: -Asking who's going to MINDvention (and doing Tough Mudder beforehand) -Asked about ESP packet effects Thanks and I hope see many of you on the course and/or at MINDvention! Sorry, but I'll be participating in the EB competition at the Palace Station Casino. (world class elbow bending marathon in Jack's Pub)
My favorite packet effect with ESP cards is Don Tanner's Five Card Miracle Prediction. |

Ha! Well played, sir!
Perhaps I'll join you after the race! They give us beer at the end of the TM event but I'll need much much more! And thanks for sharing, Bob, I need to look that up, it's not ringing any bells at the moment. Lem |

Lem-
I may be mistaken about the title. It may be "Five Card Miracle" or something similar. I've been using it since the early seventies, but it was out earlier than that. It came in both regular card and Jumbo card versions. It's was my opener for a long time. |

Thanks Bob, much appreciated!
For everybody else, IF you decide to do the Tough Mudder event, let me know. Even if we run in different waves, we can commiserate over the free beer after we finish! |

I've always had a problem with the Bubby Kneel effect from Devil of a Bar & Pub. Mainly, the last effect - "Gilbreath Mess" with only six cards/coasters does not always work. It requires an accurate & correct shuffle by your participant. I'm sure it's probably me, but if done the way it's explained in the book, I've only had this work half the time. Try it yourself ten times and then call me crazy. Or better yet, tell me what I could be doing wrong.

I'm not sure what you're doing wrong, Hugo. The problem as I see it with the Bubby Kneel effect as originally written is that the spread of the coasters needs to keep an overlap, although I've actually never had an issue. I was more hesitant to use that sort of move in effects like Dunn's Deal (True Astonishment set).
However, I use the ParaLaps ESP cards. Anybody who has them knows they have been very specially prepared NOT to behave like cards (e.g., they don't spread like playing cards). My response, and something I've started using a great deal with spread and mixes like this, is using a Rosetta Shuffle. It's easy, looks neat, and, for my money, seems even more random than spreading and pushing. NOTES: It isn't a false Rosetta Shuffle, it's a real one. Spin the cards then legitimately push them together. Try it with playing cards to get the idea (I recommend practicing using two sets of cards numbered 1-5; suits irrelevant). Example of what the spinning of the cards looks like (though it's not a real shuffle in this example): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzkvX1v6hfw Try it that way, then tell me if you are still having issues and we can try to figure it out together. By the way, my significant other HATES the Bubby Kneel trick, either with coasters or ESP cards, she cannot wrap her head around it (which is so great since she catches most other stuff). Best, Lem |

Thanks, Lem. Yep, that's the problem I was having: the cards must overlap, meaning that it must be an exact shuffle - which is exactly what you, as the mage, say that you're avoiding! Now, I know that misdirection is the heart of magic, but telling someone that "I'll let you shuffle the cards however you want" and then basically overlapping the shuffle for them is more than ridiculous. To me anyway. I'm sure it works for some. Aside from the ending, I like the Bubby Kneel effect. I think your Rosetta Shuffle idea is very interesting. I'll give it a shot. Thanks!

Hi Hugo,
Just going by your post, you might be missing something (my apologies if I am wrong). By no means must the shuffle be exact, a riffle shuffle (an inexact one) is actually the standard by which to evaluate this. I don't want to get into the nitty gritty of the Gilbreath but the order of each half must stay intact but any number of cards can fall between any cards. Again, an exact shuffle isn't needed, a standard riffle shuffle (not an exact one) would work just as well. In Bubby Kneel, as originally written, coasters aren't easy to shuffle, hence the spread and merge. Here is a FULL DECK version of merging two piles, which would work just fine (start at 2:46): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSflRICWThE Notice it isn't an exact shuffle at all, it doesn't need to be. If that doesn't make sense, PM me and we can go through the Gilbreath as it applies to this portion of the effect. Finally, and I don't mean anything by this, but you are dealing half the cards out prior to combining, right? The piles need to be in a certain kind of relationship for this to work. I recommend getting two sets of cards, numbered 1-10, and going through the process. With playing cards, there should be absolutely no problem when you combine the piles, if there is, try a riffle shuffle, if you are still having an issue, then it's a technical error that we can discuss. Remember, deal out half of cards, freely shuffle together, then deal out from top of deck. The trick should work every single time. Let me be clear here, it should work EVERY SINGLE TIME WITHOUT AN EXACT SHUFFLE. Best of luck, Lem |

Bryn,
I saw some people do TM in full gear, that's impressive. Although, let's be honest here, anybody who puts on a uniform every day is already one Tough Mudder...! Last one I did was in Lake Tahoe area in California. Started at 7000 feet and went up to 9200, I was sucking wind. So I was very happy to see the Tough Mudder World Championships in Vegas right before MINDvention. One day I'll meet up on a course with some mentalists/psychic entertainers/psychopaths from here on the Café. Best of luck all, Lem |
