The comic actually speaks volumes. The tweaker in fully obsessed by the weapon of choice, not unlike Gollum in the LOTR's series. The seller is taken aback and has one eye raised adding to the furrow of his brow. His right hand is most likely hitting the panic button behind the counter notifying the folks in the back that a customer needs to be escorted out.

It kinda makes me want to go to a gun store and repeat the line just to see their reaction. Except that they've probably all seen the cartoon already.

Political cartoons nearly ALWAYS have an underlying message that is hardly a joke. That's why they're not simply referred to as cartoons and why they appear on editorial pages rather than in the comics sections.
Acesover- Dram shop laws are common. Most require that the patron exhibit obvious signs of intoxication. Just as the guy in the cartoon was exhibiting obvious signs of being nuts. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dram_shop Now what if the guy in the cartoon was obviously intoxicated rather than obviously crazy? Would your opinion change? And what would the difference be. Isn't intoxication just another form of mental impairment? |

The point is propaganda.

Aren't all jokes propaganda in one form or another? They take one side and exaggerate it for comedic affect. Life is too short.

The way ideas are sold to people through fiction is quite interesting anyway. The way it works is because it is fiction on offer; one does not question it logically, as one would if one is offered something factual, such as, a documentary. Because it is fiction on offer the conscious side of brain switches off and one simply goes along with it for one’s amusement. The message in the fiction gets through the firewall to the subconscious mind and one takes on the idea as truth or fact. The same message or idea can be put into many different fictional things, such as cartoons and so on. After a while you believe the message. Moreover you don’t know why you believe it. So, not all things are just funny or just fiction. These things can and are used to brainwash people more or less. It is more effective than say a political broadcast. People today are really bombarded with these methods in what is to them oh just a joke.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

When purchasing a handgun you have forms to fill out that ask question about mental health, drugs, prison records, military service, PFA's and several other questions that if answered in a bad way deny your purchase. Have you ever filled out the form to purchase a handgun (which I am sure you have)? You are asked on the form several question that cover just about all of the questions asked here. Of course one can lie. But now we are in different waters. We are now dealing with the criminal element. Again gun laws are obeyed only by law abiding citizens and not criminals. More laws and rstraints do not really accomplishment keeping guns out of the hands of criminals. however lawsof some sort canpossibly regarding ones sanity maybe of help but I amnot sure how they could be implemented. Again I mention hipaa laws and peoples right to privacy. No easy answer. To put minds at ease I believe that most if not all FFL dealers would deny selling a firearm to an individual that apparently was insane and would more than likely call 911. However I can not be sure of that. Before a dealer sells a firearm he is bound by manymore laws thanthe average individual who decides to sell his weapon.

I always get into trouble with questions from people who have to ask them.
When I had my shoulder replaced the conversation with the nurse went like this. Nurse: Who should we contact in case of emergency? Danny: 911. Nurse: No I mean if something goes wrong in the surgery? Danny: Well contact a doctor please. Nurse: Someone in your family? Danny: They don't know a thing about medicine, call a DOCTOR PLEASE! Nurse: Who should we contact in your family if something happens? Danny: Look they are all going to be in the waiting room. Just ask. Nurse: Do you have a living will? Danny: Is there something I need to know about this surgery that you are not telling me? So I can sympathize with the cartoon and the guy saying that. I have said things like that myself in those situations. But I digress.

Acesover- the extensive forms you cite are NOT the case in all states. I only recall answering a few questions when I bought my guns. And when I got my shotgun all I had to do was show my ID.
But I'm glad you agree that the dealer shouldn't sell the gun to such an individual. |

Haha. I just saw this topic
I thought the cartoon was mildly funny - not because of the subject matter, but because it was the type of joke ("the voices in my head say...") is pretty standard stuff. But I smiled, for sure! The "Cheeseman" thing was hilarious. The first time that happened (to my knowledge!) was on a Wizard Product Review show that was discussing the effect, "Tiny Plunger". I made a 'funny' comment on it here on the Café, and David Penn read it on the WPR, with Craig adding, "That's not very helpful, Cheeseman!" I absolutely loved it, and downloaded the show so I could show it to future generations FYI, I now have a number of pistols, and a revolver. A Glock 19 is what I have chosen to have "at the ready" should the need arise, in the very unlikely event that fleeing/escape end up not being an option. My most gratifying moment was actually to do with a nickel Smith and Wesson 39-2 I purchased (former police officer's pistol - this one made in the late 70's or early 80's). It had serious failure to eject issues. 2 thorough cleanings only mildly helped. Next step was removing the extractor/spring, and cleaning them and the surrounding area. Still didn't correct. So I ordered a new extractor spring (a whopping $1.07), and that did the trick. An exceptionally simple surgery, but to a novice hammering out a pin, etc..., I was a bit worried, but all ended well Shoots beautifully, now. A real pleasure. I'm a member of a local range now, and enjoying shooting far more than I expected.
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".
